ohhh I want to get some Lavender but just haven't seen any plants out here or on QVC!

If you ever get to tulsa, there are a couple of greenhouses here that could probably help you in tracking down lavender. the one I went to ordered English lavender for me specially, so now I have 6 plants growing -- yes, they are growing! yay! The thing with lavender in Oklahomian soil is that you have to add lime to it. fortunately, lime isn't too expensive. :)

dixie,

I did some of those red sunflowers last year---they were spectactular! And lavender... girl, we have to talk. I have sort of a 'thing' for lavender.

Actually, we just turned the whole front over to it, more or less. We took out all of the grass and have planted all mediterranean low/no water plants. Everything's finally waking up after winter and I'm soooo excited for it to GROW!

(oh crud, that image is waaaay too big...)

Keep talking plants, kids, you're getting me excited

realllllllllly now? that sounds interesting...

did you just sprinkle the lavendar seeds through-out the whole yard? give me details... lol

i LOVE how everything comes to life in spring... my most fave season of the year...

hehe... i also bought lavendar tulips... i guess you can say i am a lavendar kinda gal... lol

lynne,

I started out with a couple of one gallon pots worth---they grow very quickly in my climate. From there, I've bought different varieties (buy the small pots, this stuff grows fast) and propagated cuttings from my favorite plants--lavendar roots very easily. If you like lav, try also rosemary, sages and thymes. All very satisfying!

Thanks :) We decided that too many ppl here have English gardens (ery similar climate) and we really wanted a lo/no water garden. So, we're making our Greek garden (except no one ever had this nice a garden in Greece! :) ) Grass is a lot of work to keep up, and we have a corner lot (yet more grass!).

The foundations are eucalyptus, my beloved olive tree, several oleanders and a generous portion of cistus plants. There are a lot of cistus types, so that could easily become a collection. Oh, I can't forget my cyprus.. I've got 2 new dwarf varieties, so we should look like a mini Italian villa any day now (still waiting!). The edging for the path is hosing for the water system; we'll water them in this first year and apply Darwin Gardening after that (survival of whatever lives on its own). Tons of herbs all down the front; lavender, rosemary, various sages and thymes. The DAH is really nursing along a beautiful little sago palm (it had its own house this winter) and I've propagated millions of cerinthe and euphorbia. Here's a tip from me: learn the latin names from the start, it's easier!

Warning: learn from my mistakes! "pea gravel" is not suitable for paths! If you want to lay in gravel, go for minus 3/4 or minus 5/8; it will dig in a grap the soil and stay wehre you put it. Pea gravel will go everywhere except where you want it.

oh I give up on these photos. Just go here, start with image #4 and scroll thru: http://s83.photobucket.com/albums/j316/meauxna/

That way the story is in order. The DAH built me the dry stack wall out front, to remind me of Spain and Greece. :)

Veggies going in this week!

Where are you guys at? I was surprised that they will grow in our zone, but there you go.. We're zone 8. I highly recommend the Sunset Western Garden book as a reference for *anyone*.

We were eager to add trees because I lost several due to age & weather. We'd taken out a huge ornamental cherry (MESSY!) that was our last protection on that western exposure so the olive... uh oh, serious garden geek talk there.. sorry :P

d'oh, you're not in the Sunset Western Garden book.

But, according to the USDA, you're a 6a; a bit on the cold side: http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/hzm-ne1.html

True olive, (Olea europaea) seems to be hardy down to an 8, maybe slightly lower. We barely hit below freezing here, and only get occasional ice. It did snow this year, but we have only lost a couple of transplants, and most of the tender things made it. I'm not too sure about a couple of the oleander which were not marked 'hardy'. The olive looks great and still has a few fruits hanging on--I didn't bother with pickling them last year 'cause it sounded too much like work for a handful.

There is an interesting looking alternative commonly called Russian Olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia). And, I've found an oak that I'd like to get that is very similar looking to the olive: silverleaf oak (Quercus hypoleucoides) if I can find another corner to squeeze it into. http://www.cnr.vt.edu/dendro/dendrology/Sy...heet.cfm?ID=626

There are some interesting comments on it here: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/mi...21430876.html?8

Here's a list of recommended trees for your area, but see if you can't find a specialty nursery in the area; we were surprised at how many 'california' plants will do well in the Oregon valleys.

http://www.treelink.org/docs/zonemap.phtml

I meant to add: If you don't mind gambling the bucks, you can *always* try it out (shipping to you would be a cost to add on--but I have a great grower here if you want their names).

The DAH built this cold frame around his precious palm (http://s83.photobucket.com/albums/j316/meauxna/?action=view&current=RIMG0021.jpg) which ultimately had bubble wrap around the tree, glass in the sides of the frame and about 6" of mulch piled up on it. It was a houseplant and seems to have survived just fine.

It's all about how much babying you're willing to do, and how OK you are if Darwin Gardening doesn't go your way ;)
