I am worried about Robin's nose bleeding..just 2 days after we arrive here he has this nose bleed profusely..it scared me to death! It never happens this bleeding where we come from. Gary said it is because of the dry air and it usually happened on a cold winter months. When it happen all I did is make him sit up and head tilted down. It stop when spring and summer come. Gary bought a humidifier kit for him, but I guess it didn't help that much. He bleed for a week now and it happened everyday also. It even wakes him up! :crying::(

Anybody can give me some tips and advice while we wait for him to his doctor appointment?..you know some first aid to do? Does anyone here experience their nose bleed like my son. I almost fainted this morning caught him washing/wiping his nose with the sink full of blood!!! clot blood too!!! :crying: :crying: :crying:

Gary and I both helpless!!! :( :( :(

EPISTAXIS

Bleeding from the nose

Bleeding from inside the nose is a common complaint presenting an emergency. Epistaxis is often a frightening sight to the patient and the attendants, especially if the patient is a kid. There are a variety of causes which can lead to bleeding from the nose.

Local causes

Finger nail trauma due to excessive nose picking. This is the most common cause among the children.

Trauma to nose due to road traffic accident or being hit on the nose by a ball or fist.

Fracture of the nasal bones.

Infections

Viral rhinitis (infection of the nose).

Acute sinusitis

Others

Foreign bodies in nose

Deviation of the nasal septum

Atmospheric changes such as sudden movement to high altitudes.

Any growth in the nasal cavity, like polyps, benign or malignant tumors.

General Causes

Hypertension – commonly seen in old age

Heart diseases

Pregnancy

Bleeding disorders – when the patient has a deficiency in the system responsible for control of bleeding there is an abnormal tendency to bleed.

Drugs- like excessive use of analgesics for pain.

Acute general infections like typhoid, pneumonia, malaria, dengue fever, measles etc.

Idiopathic - at times the cause of bleeding may not be clear.

Management

- Don’t panic because most of the time bleeding can be controlled by pinching the nose tightly for about five minutes.

- Ice compress can be applied in the nose. They cause bleeding blood vessels to constrict & bleeding stops.

- If bleeding is profuse the patient should be taken to the doctor. It may require inserting packs in the nose to stop the bleeding.

- Hypertensive patients should take their blood pressure controlling medication regularly.

- Excessive nose picking is a very common cause of bleeding both in children & young adults and should be discouraged.

Take him to a doctor.... they are the only people who are going to be able to tell you what could be causing this to happen.... no one should seek important medical advise on the internet.... he needs to be seen and assesed by a doctor.... once you have an answer to the issue from a doctor then you will find lots of good information on the internet but you need to get the right diagnoses first...

Glad you are going to the Dr.

In the meantime, one thing you can try is putting vaseline inside the nostrils throughout the day and at night before bed. I know it sounds weird but a friend of mine had this problem when she visited Alaska one summer and she said vaseline inside her nostrils helped b/c it was so dry there. Not globs of it, but a thin layer.

About the clots of blood, I am guessing it's just mucus/boogers(yum hehe) mixed in to the blood.

You may need to see an EENT (ears, eyes, nose & throat) Dr.

I grew up with chronic nose bleeds and now my daughter has the same thing.

My nose would bleed all the time and it was really bad during the winter

Basically the veins in the nose are very thin and aren’t protected with think skin as in other parts of the body.

The EENT Dr. courterize the vessels in my nose making the layers above them thinker keeping me from having nose bleeds.

I hope this helps

Good luck

Should probably get it checked out just to be sure - I have intermittent nose-bleeds out of my right nostril due to a damaged blood vessel. I had it cauterized in the UK but it didn’t really take so probably need to go back again. Started after I used a nasal spray for allergies 10 years ago – never really been the same after that (those things should really come with better warnings).

Glad he's going to the doctor. Really (and this is the nurse coming out in me) I wouldn't put anything up his nose except saline nasal spray or saline gel until he goes to the doctor. Chances are it's just the dry air here that's affecing him, but on the chance there is something else going on, you don't want to put any medication up there. Keeping the nasal passages nice and moist will help prevent nose bleeds if it's due to dryness. And like Mags said, they may cauterize the vessel that's causing the problem which is not a big deal at all. My daughter had that done when she was 2 after she has nasal trauma. Keep up updated on our man Robin!

THANK YOU ALL for the kind words..it does make me feel better. Gary and I will take Robin to the doctor for sure.

We are using humidifier and seems like it didn't help that much, is there any kind of way to use to keep the air moist? Thanks!

what type of heat do you have where you live? is it forced air or radiator?

plants may help provide moisture in the air.

Forced air..that is what we are using..

some forced air systems have a humidifier on them for introducing moisture into the air. if you have heater vents on the floor, you could try shallow pans of water placed where the air blows over the pan. if on the ceiling, then i don't have an idea :P

Luz, I don't really have any new info to add but I hope that doctors will be able to give Robin a way to deal with his nosebleeds.

My son had this problem once too .. but at that time he had very high fever and that, combined with the dryness of the air, resulted to nosebleeds. I know how scary it can be for y'all.
