Ah yes fat threads, it's been a while since we've had one of those......

HFCS are insidious, they are in everything. Between those and partially hydrogenated oils, the only things you can eat without ingesting either one of them are twigs, berries, and dirt.

evdogg412 -- that wasn't remotely funny.

I though it was funny to watch you all get your panties tide in a wad over nothing lol. :jest:

let's play a game eric - you keep making remarks about people with weight problems and women from the uk, and we'll bet on how long your suspension is for, mkay?

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

If you do some research, you'll see that Americans started becoming really overweight at the same time that High Fructose Corn Syrup started being used in EVERYTHING.

Wanna stop the Obesity epidemic? Stop buying products with HFCS. Make the manufacturers stop using it.

As it is basically chemically identical to refined cane sugar, how would replacing it with sugar change anything? High Fructose Corn Syrup is about 50% glucose, 50% fructose. Sucrose (ordinary sugar) breaks down immediately in the stomach to 50% glucose and 50% fructose.

The Federal government is to blame here anyway - sugar subsidies are responsible for sugar being about 3 times more expensive in the US than the rest of the world. End sugar subsidies and I'm sure that HFCS will be replaced immediately with cheaper imported sugar.

I'm not a chemist or a biologist, but the latest theories say that the effect is in the breaking down process. HFCS isn't chemically identical, though it's pretty close, and the body responds to it by jacking up insulin levels, which encourages fat storage. The human body just isn't as simple as calories in, calories out.

That, and it's in friggin' everything and tastes like #######. Compare a Coke made with sugar to one made with HFCS. It's a zillion times better with sugar. (You may have to check out an immigrant neighborhood to get your hands on it.) Right next to my apartment building is a convenience store owned by Dominicans who import Coke from Mexico (sugar) largely for this one older Hispanic customer they have... and now C., because Coke made with sugar in a glass bottle is really pretty awesome.

I'm tempted to buy Ketchup from a Russian shop we go to but I can't see paying $5 for a bottle of кетчуп, but I KNOW it will taste better AND be better for us! ;)

Trader Joe's sells a bottle for under $2 that uses cane sugar and much less than Heinz. Some of the independent soda brands also use cane sugar in their sodas. It takes some searching for, but there are some products that don't use HFCS in them.

 even the Russian shop is slightly (about 4 miles) closer then the nearest Trader Joe's :(

Jones Soda uses Cane Sugar in their soda. It's now sold at Wal-Mart (8 packs) and many gas stations/convenience stores. An 8 pack at Wally World is $2.50

Well, I'd get offended, but I just consider the source. Do I really care what someone such as *that* thinks about British women or fat people like myself? Nope.

well jokes aside.. what are we supposed to do? just make everything bigger? that's just a neverending patch - not solution- to obesity in USA

If society is helping to perpetuate this trend then YES! As well as what we are doing by bringing to the attention of the public. I am so happy that they show childhood obesity commercials on t.v. now. I think alot of people ingore it in their kids because it is easy but this puts it right in their face and make them take some responsibility for their childs life now and in the future.

I think that coke tastes better with real sugar in my own, un-scientific research. Side by side, I'm not sure that I could tell the difference.

The import quotas and tariffs on sugar are the reason for HFCS. Getting rid of them would save US consumers billions of dollars a year in grocery bills. Artificially high sugar prices in the US also increase the price of HFCS ironically. Companies like ADM benefit greatly from this.
