"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Good health advice is: Don't eat too much refined sugar. Period. This is something we already know. Most fruits are loaded with sugars too - a diet of just fruit would probably not be good for you either.

I have yet to see any evidence that HFCS causes or is even associated with any disease in humans. Or GM foods for that matter. If you know of any, please point me to it.

Humans do not eat diets of pure sugars anyway - I don't see how this is relevant.

All I know is from health and nutrition magazines about the potential harm of HFCS as being worse than cane sugar.

Here's a worthwhile read if you're interested... I won't post the entire article:

“High fructose corn syrup contains what are called ‘free’ or unbound fructose molecules. These molecules have been found to interfere with normal heart functioning, among other things. A recent study performed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) showed that high fructose diets shortened the life span of laboratory mice from the normal two years to an astounding five weeks. One study performed with human subjects was inadvertently stopped short of completion as some of the subjects developed abnormal heart conditions.”

...

Dr. Robert C. Adkins, father of the Adkins diet, has warned on his website of the dangers of HFCS. Pointing to the University of Minnesota study, he explained:

“Triglyceride goes into the bloodstream and makes our cells resistant to insulin. And insulin resistance…is the fast road to fatigue, malaise, diabetes and, of course, obesity….”

He went on to comment:

“University of London researcher P.A. Mayes believes that high fructose consumption causes the liver to release an enzyme called PDH that instructs the body to burn sugar instead of fat. If true, then a high-fructose diet—and the average American consumes 9 percent of his or her daily calories in the form of fructose—is a major metabolic factor in favor of weight gain….Considering the health implications of obesity, it seems like a clear-cut choice: Avoid high-fructose corn syrup.”

If you do some research, you'll see that Americans started becoming really overweight at the same time that High Fructose Corn Syrup started being used in EVERYTHING.

Wanna stop the Obesity epidemic? Stop buying products with HFCS. Make the manufacturers stop using it.

I agree that might be one of the reasons, but mostly technology and life-style. People are way less active nowadays since they have machines and computers to do everything for them.

Ah yes fat threads, it's been a while since we've had one of those......

HFCS are insidious, they are in everything. Between those and partially hydrogenated oils, the only things you can eat without ingesting either one of them are twigs, berries, and dirt.

As it is basically chemically identical to refined cane sugar, how would replacing it with sugar change anything? High Fructose Corn Syrup is about 50% glucose, 50% fructose. Sucrose (ordinary sugar) breaks down immediately in the stomach to 50% glucose and 50% fructose.

The Federal government is to blame here anyway - sugar subsidies are responsible for sugar being about 3 times more expensive in the US than the rest of the world. End sugar subsidies and I'm sure that HFCS will be replaced immediately with cheaper imported sugar.

I'm not a chemist or a biologist, but the latest theories say that the effect is in the breaking down process. HFCS isn't chemically identical, though it's pretty close, and the body responds to it by jacking up insulin levels, which encourages fat storage. The human body just isn't as simple as calories in, calories out.

That, and it's in friggin' everything and tastes like #######. Compare a Coke made with sugar to one made with HFCS. It's a zillion times better with sugar. (You may have to check out an immigrant neighborhood to get your hands on it.) Right next to my apartment building is a convenience store owned by Dominicans who import Coke from Mexico (sugar) largely for this one older Hispanic customer they have... and now C., because Coke made with sugar in a glass bottle is really pretty awesome.
