Damn, that sucks.

Especially about the pirate ride, glad they changed it back. I mean, what is piracy without pillaging? That's like all they did!

Fat people are rude and the meanest when it comes to fast food lines lol. Drop a cheeseburger on the ground and they come running for it lol. :jest:

I am sorry was this supposed to be funny?

Why is it o.k. to make fun of fat people but not anybody else and people just accept it?

I agree with you there. That comment is supposed to be a joke, sure, but it is still potentially offensive to many. Not everyone is over weight because they eat cheeseburgers...

If you do some research, you'll see that Americans started becoming really overweight at the same time that High Fructose Corn Syrup started being used in EVERYTHING.

Wanna stop the Obesity epidemic? Stop buying products with HFCS. Make the manufacturers stop using it.

As it is basically chemically identical to refined cane sugar, how would replacing it with sugar change anything? High Fructose Corn Syrup is about 50% glucose, 50% fructose. Sucrose (ordinary sugar) breaks down immediately in the stomach to 50% glucose and 50% fructose.

The Federal government is to blame here anyway - sugar subsidies are responsible for sugar being about 3 times more expensive in the US than the rest of the world. End sugar subsidies and I'm sure that HFCS will be replaced immediately with cheaper imported sugar.

I love cheeseburgers. Perhaps the greatest food ever invented. I know what I'm having for dinner now (already had one for lunch).

The Federal government is to blame here anyway - sugar subsidies are responsible for sugar being about 3 times more expensive in the US than the rest of the world. End sugar subsidies and I'm sure that HFCS will be replaced immediately with cheaper imported sugar.

There's a couple of other murky things that consumers should know about HFCS. According to a food technology expert, two of the enzymes used, alpha-amylase and glucose-isomerase, are genetically modified to make them more stable. Enzymes are actually very large proteins and through genetic modification specific amino acids in the enzymes are changed or replaced so the enzyme's "backbone" won't break down or unfold. This allows the industry to get the enzymes to higher temperatures before they become unstable.

Consumers trying to avoid genetically modified foods should avoid HFCS. It is almost certainly made from genetically modified corn and then it is processed with genetically modified enzymes. I've seen some estimates claiming that virtually everything--almost 80 percent--of what we eat today has been genetically modified at some point. Since the use of HFCS is so prevalent in processed foods, those figures may be right.

But there's another reason to avoid HFCS. Consumers may think that because it contains fructose--which they associate with fruit, which is a natural food--that it is healthier than sugar. A team of investigators at the USDA, led by Dr. Meira Field, has discovered that this just ain't so.

Sucrose is composed of glucose and fructose. When sugar is given to rats in high amounts, the rats develop multiple health problems, especially when the rats were deficient in certain nutrients, such as copper. The researchers wanted to know whether it was the fructose or the glucose moiety that was causing the problems. So they repeated their studies with two groups of rats, one given high amounts of glucose and one given high amounts of fructose. The glucose group was unaffected but the fructose group had disastrous results. The male rats did not reach adulthood. They had anemia, high cholesterol and heart hypertrophy--that means that their hearts enlarged until they exploded. They also had delayed testicular development. Dr. Field explains that fructose in combination with copper deficiency in the growing animal interferes with collagen production. (Copper deficiency, by the way, is widespread in America.) In a nutshell, the little bodies of the rats just fell apart. The females were not so affected, but they were unable to produce live young.

"The medical profession thinks fructose is better for diabetics than sugar," says Dr. Field, "but every cell in the body can metabolize glucose. However, all fructose must be metabolized in the liver. The livers of the rats on the high fructose diet looked like the livers of alcoholics, plugged with fat and cirrhotic."

HFCS contains more fructose than sugar and this fructose is more immediately available because it is not bound up in sucrose. Since the effects of fructose are most severe in the growing organism, we need to think carefully about what kind of sweeteners we give to our children. Fruit juices should be strictly avoided--they are very high in fructose--but so should anything with HFCS.

This article is somewhat misleading in several areas. First - as far as I know, a CCP is a technical certification to operate a heart-lung machine. I wouldn't say in any way that this qualifies one to know anything about organic chemistry or diabetes, or sugar metabolism for that matter. She also does not appear to cite any sources for these studies.

The most common form of HFCS is roughly equal in Fructose and Glucose, the same as refined sugar is. It can be made in varying ratios, which the fructose and glucose are chemicaly bonded in Sucrose (table sugar). Sucrose breaks down into fructose and glucose in the stomach and intestine anyway, there is no difference.

Glucose, Fructose and Sucrose are all found naturally in just about every plant. The only thing that is remotely synthetic is how it is made from corn. By the way - you can extract any of these sugars from just about any plant - the only question is how economically viable or efficient it is.

Lots of foods are genetically modified. We have been doing this the hard way for thousands of years by selectively breeding plants, and crossing mutant plants to get desirable results. If I make two identical plants - one by altering a gene, and one by selective breeding - what is really the difference? (Plant genomes are actually quite complex, unlikely you will get identical ones, but you get the idea).

Good health advice is: Don't eat too much refined sugar. Period. This is something we already know. Most fruits are loaded with sugars too - a diet of just fruit would probably not be good for you either.

I have yet to see any evidence that HFCS causes or is even associated with any disease in humans. Or GM foods for that matter. If you know of any, please point me to it.

Humans do not eat diets of pure sugars anyway - I don't see how this is relevant.

Hun, my best friend...who is a male...and happens to be a BBW Lover...put it best...Being fat is the only discrimination that is still (SADLY) tolerated in this world.

I could sit here and say something about a certain race, or talk about a certain racist group, and I would be considered a racist...and probably be called everyname in the book (And believe me...I am not a racist...I equally hate everyone...hehe...j/k)....

But seriuosly if someone says something about someone that is overweight...it seems to be ok...because everyone has this image of a size 0 Hollywood model type. Sorry...I'd rather be fat and healthy any day than have bulemia or be anorexic. (which I am healthy btw....just had my physical to prove it...suppose my days of lifting weights and playing American football helped...lol)

Thing is... some people cannot help it...it could be because of a medical condition. Other people are just lazy and choose not to do anything but sit on the couch eating McD's and watching repeat episodes of The Simpsons. No one should be judged or discriminated against becaue of an outward appearance..See thing is...when you make fun of someone...or judge someone....let's just say....Karma has a way of coming back and biting one in the bum two fold.... whether it be with you or someone you love
