Oh dear gawd.........there was a box on the DS230 for a SSN? I thought he had to apply for one after about 2 weeks of being here? :blink:

I have an IR-1 visa if that makes any difference. But yes, you can tick the box, and they are supposed to apply for a SSN for you, but from what I've read, alot of times they never do, and you end up going into an office and applying again.

Aug/2001: We met, started dating long distance style and lots of weekend sleepovers!!!

May 16/2004: Married, and still doing weekend sleepovers

Mar 13/2006: Sent off I-130

Mar 28/2006: Rec'vd NOA1

July 7/2006: Rec'vd NOA2

Aug 29/2006: Rec'vd IV Bill

Sep 12-2006: Pay IV Bill

Mar 30/2007: Case Completed at NVC

Jul 18/2007: Case left NVC on way to Montreal

Aug 31/2007: Rec'vd 1st interview letter (the one they DIDN'T send me, due to NVC having my address tagged as bad---this one was hubby's that I got 5 weeks late.)

Aug 9/2007 : 1st Interview Date (of course I missed it)

Sep 15/2007: Rec'vd 2nd interview letter

Sep 26/2007: Medical Appt booked

Oct 5/2007: 2nd Interview scheduled in Montreal

Oct 5/2007: Approved!!!!!!!

Oct 11/2007: Recv'd Visa in hand after hearing doorbell ring

Oct 21/2007: Activated visa

Nov 20/2007: Applied for SSN because it wasn't done for me... UGH!!!

Dec 03/2007: Received SSN in mail... YAHOO!

Apr 11/2008: GC finally arrived

Samachi are you in a town that has an SSA? I think that you could go there and check if you are in the system. my hubby already had a SSN so was able to just go in and request a new card that didn't have the "need INS approval for work" verbage. He went on a Monday and waited for 2 hours then gave up, but the next day only waited 15-20 minutes and was out of there. He actually got the card 1 week later. I'd guess that's a bit quicker becuase it wasn't an app for a new number

4/1/04 no word from NE contacted senators office, app found

NOA1 4/13/04

Gave up on ridiculously long US process-started Canadian

12/4/04 submitted app

LSS app returned because of missed signatures, lost in transit, resubmitted in June

9/28/05 landed, yippie

10/4/05 fly back to US to "finish up Master's" lose mind and switch to PhD

Damn it back to the US process

3/something/2005 finally get NOA2, no idea why it took so long

4/15/07 get case approval from NVC

8/9/07 Montreal here we come

10/14/07 hubby activated his visa

My SSN didnt come after checking off the box! Walked into the SSN office, handed them the already filled out form I had downloaded prior and a week later it came in the mail Too easy.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Yep, there are a few couple of offices in the surrounding towns I can go to. Gonna go next week and see what they tell me. I read in another post somewhere that you need your I-551, and proof of residency (meaning, proof you live at your address). Which I don't have anything yet. I might be changing my address with USCIS, cuz my husband is deployed, (no one there getting the mail right now, exepct for when I go down to check it), and Im going to look for work for now. A job that I found, is just waiting for my SSN, and its about an hour away. I have found a place I can rent for now. At least I know the mail would be checked everyday.

Any updates on this thread? I went to the SSA office a few days ago, and sure enough, I wasn't in their system, so I applied for my SSN. NICE! Still haven't received my green card, and its been over 30 days..... Will stay patient though.

Yep, it's on the DS230 part II but I think it's only intended for those coming in with an IR-1 or a CR-1. Not that is seems to be of much use if you do check it, like Samaci I've been waiting for it my number to come for nearly four weeks now so I'll be heading off to the SSA offices in the morning. :angry:

4 September 2007: Still received no NOA1, Embassy in email confirms that I-130 was filed on 3 July

14 September 2007: NOA2

24 September 2007: Received Packet 3

9 October 2007: Medical

24 October 2007: Interview - APPROVED

9 November 2007: POE - JFK

15 January 2008: Green Card received in the post

Removing Conditions

19 August 2009: Posted 1-751

21 August 2009: 1-751 Receipt Notice

25 September 2009: Biometrics Appointment

14 October 2008: Email from USCIS saying 10 year GC ordered.

To quicken up the pace at the SSA office, fill out the form online at ssa.gov

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

Thanks for the tip Flames9 :thumbs: , am doing so now. Maybe it's just having spent so long dealing with USCIS forms and their ridiculously byzantine nature but the SSA form doesn't seem to require hardly any info. If only all forms could be like this.
