recent waits for the physical green card

I know that the hubby's canceled visa works as a green card for a year, so I'm not worried but just wondering how long people have been waiting for the actual card lately. I tried search for this but mostly got K wait times and can't figure out how to convert those timelines-is it time from AOS applied or approved, or time from some magic K-visa dance ;) We were told at the border that it may take 3-4 months, is that really how long it's going to take or is that just the standard "stop bothering us" timeline that they give so we don't make too many infopass appts?

About a month back in 2005. And from what I have read lately on VJ, a month is a good estimate.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

it's not quite a month yet. Like I said, I'm not worried just wondering when I should start worrying.

Samici-I'm confused. did you cross the border to activate your visa and then go back home to Canada? How are you waiting for your green card/ssn before you move?

Yes, I activated it 2 1/2 weeks ago. I was praying they were going to tell me it would be ok to come back and forth, and they did. Mine is an IR-1. (His exact words were: "Oh yeah, sure you can come and go as you please, you have an IR-1 visa." )I'm down in the US now, came through today, and showed them my visa/passport at the border this afternoon. No problems at all, and barely asked me anything. I'm hoping to find a job before I move, which I think I have a good chance at one, just waiting on my SSN, which isin't here yet. They are being sent to my husbands address in the US. (my future address)

Keep in mind Samaci that even if u ticked off the box on the form for the SSN (think it was form ds -230??) it may not come and you will have to go in person and re-apply for the SSN I had too. The SSn arrived 1 week later. One can download the SSn form from the govt site and take it with ya. http://www.ssa.gov/

gotcha. I think that there is a grace period where you can work without a SSN but with proof that you have applied for it-60 or 90 days. I'm not sure if a company would be willing to hire you under that grace period. I don't have time right now to search the SSA website right now for a link to that, but you might search for that reg and take it with you to interviews.

Probably best to have some kind of paperwork when looking for work! I imagine some employers have no clue what a cr-1, ir-1 etc is and who can legally work, and who can not!!

Yeah, I know. I'm gonna head down next week and go into one of the offices to see if I'm in the system yet.
