So I have this theory that the two most popular things in this forum are illegal alien threads and threads about donuts. I figure if I can combine the the two, I can create the biggest pool/thread ever! Muahahahahahahaha!

So stand up for your right to finally receiving all those damn donuts that were promised in the other threads! And then post your rant about the illegal donuts trying to take over our country's benefit system.

even the cops turn a blind eye to the illegal donuts :ranting:
Nope. Those can be taken, without fear of being charged with bribetaking.

I have a few questions to ask this doughnut (donut) before I would even consider eating it...

Which one is it? A donut or doughnut?

VJ Hours - I am available M-F from 10am - 5pm PST. I will occasionaly put in some OT for a fairly good poo slinging thread or a donut.

We'll allow the chocolate donuts and the spinkle donuts, but we won't take the powdered donuts.

:o But the powdered one are the only ones I like!!! How about a cinnamon powdered donuts? Gonna discriminate against them too??

Shipley Do-Nuts

DONUT OR DOUGHNUT?

After much research we have found that, according to the dictionaries that are most common, this pastry can truly be spelled either way and it will still be correct. The Shipley Company chooses to spell it "DONUT'. Since Shipleys obviously makes the absolute best D-O-N-U-T, we believe this to be the correct spelling.

Donut or Doughnut?

Well, I'm here to tell ya, peeps, that at least according to the 19th century American author Washington Irving, the original and probably 'orthodox' spelling for those fattening deep-fried pieces of dough or batter is doughnut and not donut. Capisce?

Here is the relevant quote from Irving's 1809 novel Knickerbocker's History of New York:

Sometimes the table was graced with immense apple-pies, or saucers full of preserved peaches and pears; but it was always sure to boast an enormous dish of balls of sweetened dough, fried in hog's fat, and called doughnuts, or olykoeks—a delicious kind of cake, at present scarce known in this city, except in genuine Dutch families.

As far as I am personally concerned, there is something to be said for historical precedent. And I stand by my man Mr. Irving. :)

Moreover, the Oxford English Dictionary contains an entry for doughnut but not donut (technically, the doughnut entry lists the subtext "also donut."

The Wikipedia article for doughnut contains some...er...rich information pertaining to the etymology of the words doughnut and donut:

"Doughnut" is the more traditional spelling, and still dominates outside the United States. At present, "donut" and "doughnut" are both pervasive in American English. The first known printed use of "donut" was in a Los Angeles Times article dated August 10, 1929. There, Bailey Millard jokingly complains about the decline of spelling, and that he "can't swallow the 'wel-dun donut' nor the ever so 'gud bred'." The interchangeability of the two spellings can be found in a series of "National Donut Week" articles in New York Times that covered the 1939 World's Fair. In four articles beginning October 9, two mention the "donut" spelling. Dunkin' Donuts, which was founded in 1948 under the name Open Kettle (Quincy, Massachusetts), is the oldest surviving company to use the "donut" variation, but the now defunct Mayflower Donut Corporation appears to be the first company to use that spelling, having used that spelling prior to WWII.

I'm no doughnut expert, but it seems to me that, at least in the United States, we have two major players in the retail doughnut arena: Dunkin' Donuts (with their unconventional and, in my opinion, nonsensical spelling); and Krispy Kreme doughnuts (with their conventional and logical spelling).

That's all I have for you today. Enjoy.
