hi all,

im new here and after scanning through a few posts i thought i would ask a few questions...maay have been asked previously but nothing in the forums is springing out as 'the same as'

im a UK citizen and my fiance is US, we have met in person three times, he came here...loves england but couldnt live here...we drive on the wrong side! so it is me who is TRYING to get over there as quick and painless as possible.

we hired a lawyer because we want nothing to be left to chance...sneeking in via mexico or canada is definatly a no go!

heres what we have done so far...

04/07 : dans first visit

26/04/07 : dan proposed (another story!)

17/06/07 : vermont recieved our paperwork

06/07 : dans second vist

07/07 : i recieved my police check back from scotland yard and local police

09/07 : dans third visit (he brought two suitcases, one was big enough for me to sneek into)

02/11/07 : the first part of our application was approved (btw dont bother registering for email notification with the ucis website...we are still waiting for that!)

our lawyer told us that the process would take 4 months as we have a 'strong case' the initial process time took 4 and half, and every day was dragging longer...waiting.

now...what happens next? besides more waiting...and what kind of costs and time scales? we were hopeing to be together by christmas (07 not 08!)

other questions i have are

does the medical have to be carried out in london? or can this be done locally?

once the visa interview is 'approved' do i get the visa there and then or is it more waiting?

thank god for technology!

nov 04 : we met online

march 07 : we went 'public'

04/07 : Dans first visit

08/06/07 : Vermont received our paperwork

06/07 : Dans second visit

07/07 : i received my police check back from Scotland yard and local police

09/07 : Dans third visit (he brought two suitcases, one was big enough for me to sneak into)

19/10/07 : dog in for rabies injection

02/11/07 : the first part of our application was approved (147 days)

05/11/07 : Touched

09/11/07 : Dan received approved letter from Vermont (original sent to lawyer)

15/11/07 : petition moves to London

22/11/07 : packet 3 received and posted back

Hello there! It's a shame your lawyer set you up for disappointment - 4 months would have been crazy, crazy fast! I'm not quite sure what the timelines are exactly, but I think you should think of the whole process as taking about 7 months.

Yes, unfortunately, the only place in the whole of the UK that can do the medical is in London. Once the visa is approved, you would get it by secure messenger service within three to five days. I think your only costs left are the medical (200 GBP) and the visa itself ($100 USD). The K1 forum towards the top of the main forum page should be helpful as well.

Oh and also, the average time between the London consulate receiving the K1 stuff from NVC and the actual interview is 55 days. So once you've heard that London has received your package, you should be able to expect to have the visa within the next two months.

It will get there.

Having the visa in hand feels good too.

Its just a matter of myself sorting things out in England and getting a flight.

It is possible but not advisable to have the medical on the same day at the visa interview. One of the reason it's not advisable is that they won't be able to approve your visa on the spot - the best they could do would be "approved pending medical results". So it would be delayed by at least 5 business days, but probably not much more than that. Another reason is that say your visa interview is at 10am and you can only get a 1pm appt for the medical - it's possible that there would be a hold up at the embassy and you could be late for or even miss the medical appt.

If I lived a long way from London, I would arrange for the medical the day before the visa interview and spend the night between. Hopefully you could get the medical appt late enough in the day that you could travel to London that same morning. Then hopefully your visa interview would be early enough the next morning that you could get home afterwards the same day. That would avoid the possibility of missing or being late to either one, but it would be a bit of a delay with the visa being approved and sent. Probably worth it though if it's really hard and/or expensive for you to get to London.
