Hi All,

I hope everyone is doing well...

I just have a few questions about moving to Florida..

1) How long does it take to get your Social Security once u land on US soil

2) Will i need to take a driving test to get another licence or can i use my UK one.

3) Does anyone know of any good websites for car insurance, where they give u a quote online...like uk sites.

Thanks

Andy

Duffbeer,

Social security card will (typically) take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks to get - you must wait 8-10 days after entering the US before applying since you will not show up in the computer system before that, then it will take 2 - 4 weeks to get it in the mail.

To get a DL, most states require driving test (some require both the written and driving portions). Check HERE for specific requirements for Florida - your profile and timeline do not indicate which visa you're coming on so it is impossible to say which requirements you will need.

Where in Florida will you be living? I moved to Fort Lauderdale almost 5 months ago. It shouldn't take too long, a couple of months for SS, DL. We use MET-Life insurance here and the rate was surprisingly low, even for my husband being a foreign licensed driver at first.
