i came to the US with K-1 visa. my husband and i got married .. we sent the papar work ( i 485 i believe) to chicago on April 15. went and got my finger prints done 3 weeks later then my case got transfered to California on May 15 (2007) ......... i never heard anything from them ever since ... called the customer service several times they couldnt really answer my questions...they just told me to wait...so i kinda feel stuck at the moment because i dont have no social security number or drivers license (well got one from home but i was told i couldnt use it ??!!!) i didnt apply for work permit because again i read a forum and they said it should take more then 3 months for the green card to be issued

we live in georgia by the way ... i went and tried to get social security once when we first got married.. the lady at the office said my i-94 was expiring i only had 14 days on it they needed 15 ' !!

does this happen alot??

Yes.

Unfortunately there isnt alot you can do but wait. I would make an infopass appointment and check as you are almost at 6 month wait.

It really annoys me when people advise other people not to file for a EAD as it is not necessary.. what a load of bull... Every case is different and just because 1 out of 50 people gets there GC within a short timeframe does not mean everyone will... The EAD is there for a reason, it should be used. Fortunately now it is included in the fee so no one should have this problem in the future.

I probably wouldnt apply for one now though, but it is a crapshoot. Do you think you will get your GC in the next 3 months? No one will be able to tell you how long it takes to get a GC.

With the SSA, yes it is normal for them to not issue a SSN 2 weeks before expiration of your visa, as your work authorisation ends on day 90.

Go HERE, check your case status - using your receit number (can do this with/without registering) and see what the latest status is. (If you haven't already that is.) Most people here have registered there so they can track their cases and get an email if a NOA (notice of action) is done.

There doesn't seem to be any logical reason on how the USCIS does business. Claudeth got her GC in five months without an interview yet others have waited over a year with an interview. The only thing I could suggest is an infopass.

Check the USCIS website. Look under immigration forms. I-765, its right there along with the instructions on filing.
