Sadly, that is also true. However, the real solution isn't closing borders, but addressing the reasons behind economic migration. Of course we all know that no single government can afford to take on global poverty it, has to be a global effort. So far there does not seem to be a collective will to try to solve these problems, and therein lies the biggest tragedy.

Opening up the borders is no solution either. The effect of dumping the problem into Europe, the USA, or any other First World nations to solve is no solution at all and just spreads the misery around. Empathy and compassion is all well and fine, but so is reality. Allowing mass immigration from impoverished Third World nations hardly even slows the inevitable. Nature has to take its course. Take a look at reality:

The reality is that there are 6.64 billions on earth today and it will increase to over 9 billion in the next 40 years. The lion's share of this is from the Third World. Blaming the West and throwing the problem in our laps to solve is lame indeed. Misery loves company, but leave me and mine out of this train wreck.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

The "ONE" campaign are trying to eliminate the debts that these impoverished third world countries owe the western world, debts that they have no hope of repaying. The solution is to write off the debts, allow these countries to recover and become self sustaining. When all the money goes towards paying interest on debts to the big nations, where is the incentive to try and make a living? These debts will never be payed, the countryfolk will forever be in poverty because of interest payments to the USA, Europe, etc. If these debts are written off, as they should be, (there is no hope in hell that they will be repaid,) then some of the third world countries may stand a chance.

Not all countries I know, some have very corrupt governments such as Sierra Leone, nothing can help these countries but those that have a chance then writing off the debts will give them the boost they need.

Again, if it were a matter of not helping by not doing anything to stop the root cause then this world is really in deep shhhhhhht. We can argue all day about what the root cause of the problem is, if its simple (like many argue here) or if its more complex (like reality usually seems to be), and come up with the same wonderful conclusions based on ignorance or on our humanity.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Corruption in leadership on all levels certainly contributes to the mismanagement of funds from the West.

Many African governments are greedy and corrupt and stuff their own pockets while the people starve and their natural resources get exploited

by the West.

In Sierra Leone a recent election has produced a leader who has put in place anti corruption entities for check and balances, transparency

and accountability. So there is hope for Sierra Leone! It has been praised as a favorable example by world leaders.

It is vital for the International community to continue to watch election processes as the people are tired of their corrupt leaders and

want change and their vote needs to be heard to effect that change.

Accountability before the world court also helps to keep atrocities in check, it is still weak. If true democracy and transparency is pushed

for by the International Community things will change so that the people will not need to risk their lives to migrate.

That is my 2 cents worth in bringing a solution to the table.

With humanitarians working on the local level and the International Community, not just America, working it from the top

eventually they will meet in the middle and cause change.

Humanitarian aid alone can't do it , nor will pure politics but all pulling together will bring about stability one slow step at a time.

We can not turn our heads and avert our eyes from the suffering of Africa like we did during the Rwandan genocide.

This goes deeper then a boat full of people wanting the good life, this is about survival, life and death, about humanity.

Indeed. People need to die (or at least stop reproducing) or we're all f*cked.

Would you two like to volunteer to be the first ones after your declaration of death ?
