Which brings me to a question. I have seen mention around here of calling the DOS for interview information - what is the scoop with that, do you not just call NVC to see if an interview has been scheduled? Prob a dumb question I have just never seen the start of a conversation on it, just people asking what the DOS phone number is

maybe Len will jump in-or someone else that did dcf. but I thought that the people that were calling DOS were the people that were being scheduled directly by Mtl, not those of us that get scheduled/held in purgatory by NVC

met summer 1999, summer 2000 hooked up-whoo hoo summer fling

summer fling failed to fizzle, married 2003

I-130 mailed 12/15/03

4/1/04 no word from NE contacted senators office, app found

NOA1 4/13/04

Gave up on ridiculously long US process-started Canadian

12/4/04 submitted app

LSS app returned because of missed signatures, lost in transit, resubmitted in June

9/28/05 landed, yippie

10/4/05 fly back to US to "finish up Master's" lose mind and switch to PhD

Damn it back to the US process

3/something/2005 finally get NOA2, no idea why it took so long

4/15/07 get case approval from NVC

8/9/07 Montreal here we come

10/14/07 hubby activated his visa

Yeah, I did a little more looking around and saw someone post that you call DOS after it has been forwarded to the consulate, so I think you are spot on.

I called NVC auto-message today to make sure it had changed to case complete - which it has, but they only changed it yesterday haha - just had to make sure!!

Wouldn't it be grand if all our interviews were scheduled next week weeeeeeeeeee!!

good question, but i don't know anything about the DOS. Hubby gave me the info, he got in touch with congressman. They might have contact with NVC. My question is something like: how many interviews they do at Mtl consulate per week, per month. That might give us more realistic expectations of the waiting time in my opinion...my 2 cents..

I'll start calling Monday, and probably twice until the 20th! I'm still the young whipper-snapper in the Montreal CR1 waiting room, so I can feign ignorance of "oh gee really" when the NVC operator gives me the canned "we only schedule the number that the embassy tells us" line.

We are whipper-snappers too so if you don't mind I might use that line as well :hehe:

FYI on a couple things, then a question.

Hubby's interview was this past Friday, and he got the visa in the mail today - only 3 business days. He lives in Toronto.

Yesterday, I also received a second reply from an assistant to Mary Marshall (I had written one letter, then another, then one saying hey thanks for getting on it finally) This letter seemed to be a reply to my thank you letter. As in a previous consulate reply, this one quibbled with my statement which I have repeated in all my letters that they clearly had "stopped" scheduling interviews for CRs/IRs, .... although more recently started rescheduling of course and got all of us caught up as of last month anyway - that's what I thanked them for. The keep saying they never "stopped" or "stalled" scheduling our pile, the scheduling is just complicated - of course so complicated they can't explain it exactly.

Anyway the key thing I wanted to share is that this letter seemed to primarily point to their having "cleared their backlog of those who were documentarily qualified" (I interpret that to mean case complete at NVC) and that they are now notifiying those eligible of their interviews "at least 2 months in advance". They didn't specifically say "and we are committed to maintining this response time" but it certainly feels as though at this moment they would like to continue to be able to say this. Anyway I hope this holds for the rest of you who are getting your cases complete right about now. And I hope the case complete time wom't become a problem.

Now, to my question. Can anyone recall from any past conversations here or provide a link to one, on, after hubby passes through the border:

1. what he needs to do if anything and how long it takes to get the green card which I guess is a separate piece that allows him to work? Or does he get that at the border.

2. what he needs to do to follow up or reapply for that darned SSN # which of course he already did on the DS 230 I guess it was... I've heard that can sometimes not be reliable and its worth it apply again or contact SSA or something -- again, when and how?

Thanks in advance and congratulations to all those who saw progress, big or small, on their case over the past month or two. I really think that's the most critical thing customers of the immigration process want to see.

the canceled ir1/cr1 visa is his proof of eligibility to work for 1 year, so no worry on that question. it seems like he might as well go to the SSA office as soon as he gets here just to make sure that he's in the system and if he's not they can put him in.

Thanks for that info C&C, very enlightening!!

There have been a couple of threads lately on how long it's taking to get the green card, like 4-5 weeks I think. As Thermophile mentioned though, you have the visa, so no problem there.

Apparently when you activate your visa at the POE you are added in to a system that the people at the SSA office can see and can then issue you the SSN. I would definately go to the office, the whole ticking it off on the form and automatically receiving it thing seems to fail more times than not.

Regarding the SSN thing, it takes around 10 to 14 BUSINESS days before one MIGHT be in the SSN system, so most of the time it is useless going to the office prior to that. If after that timeframe, it is best to download the form from ssa.gov, have it all filled out, then make ur way to the office and check on it. if ur in the system, sweet, if not, just hand them the already filled out form, and ur golden! In my case, 1 week after I handed in the new form, I had my SSN card.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Thanks C&C for that info! I think it's a good idea to send the Montreal Consulate a letter of thanks after the interview, thanks for bringing it up!
