It wouldn't make the person inherently untrustworthy - in my eyes at least, nor could I say that their past blip is causing me intentional harm.

Perhaps this is really a difference between generations. For example - a person who has been through at least one prior marriage might make more discriminating decisions about their subsequent relationship choices. But then again perhaps their priorities in terms of what they are looking for in that marriage might be a little different also.

It does essentially come down to human fallibility.

Knowing every single detail of a person's life? No, that is unrealistic and I don't expect to know that. If a person is here illegally and/or think rules don't apply to them . . . that is not impossible to know.

In a current context - I can agree with that.

It possibly is a difference in generations, experience and in cultural norms.

just food for thought - before nessa and i ever met, i grilled her about her past, specifically about criminal behavior, and into far more depth than anything uscis covers. why you might ask? because of my job and also because i didn't want someone with certain red flags/vices - one of which is gambling. we all have our items that are not negotiable, and some of us have an extensive list :P

i agree with geg completely about getting involved with someone who breaks the law whenever it suits them. had a former g/f like that.........and that relationship had the expected result.

so to answer that pressing question that so many of you have been throwing around, i'll be the first to toss out an answer. if i was in love with someone who was illegal, yes, she'd be on the curb. but yeah, i know, i'm heartless.

Hey, Charles, you brought up something I forgot to address, but is totally obvious now. Yes, what you do for a living matters too. I make my living with my credibility. I can't afford to mitigate or compromise that by an involvement with someone shady.

It never occurred to me to grill any of my partners about criminal activity, I just assumed that it was unlikely that they would have one. I am not sure how I would take someone who started asking me questions seeking to determine if I had a criminal past...I guess I would be somewhat shocked that they would even go there.

it has a very negative aspect to my job - due to the potential for money issues and blackmail. plus i saw lotsa gals dropping their husband's entire paycheck in one night in germany gambling on slot machines - $3500 in one night - the husband's entire paycheck right there. another gal blew 7k in a week, and so on.

That kind of gambling is an addiction. It's like drinking surely, fine if it's done in moderation, pretty anti social if done to excess.

i just don't see much point to gambling. i've been to vegas. and being around slot machines for about 15 years, i've spent a total of no more than $5. period. the most i ever gambled at one time was in vegas, i got a $2 roll of nickles and played it all out - just for the sole purpose of my being able to say i gambled in vegas

yeah i know i'm cheap. but money don't grow on trees.

I've also had credibility issues with someone in my past .... the results were ... as charles mentioned ... as expected.

The discussions Isa & I had about each others past while dating (and we kinda worked together) ... well the USCIS can probably take lessons from our conversations. She demands and deserves my honesty ... just as I do hers. We understand each other.

I'll be the second to toss out an answer. If i was in love with someone who was illegal, yes, she'd also be on the curb. So I guess that makes me a heartless one too.

Mostly, it is pretty pointless, gamblers are more often going to lose than win otherwise the Casino bosses wouldn't be rich. Having said that, a lot of people indulge in a lottery ticket once in a while without losing their sense of perspective.

Heartless one? I don't know, I just don't know how one can be certain how one would react without having been faced with that particular circumstance. I am prepared to give those in these type of situations the benefit of the doubt, meaning, should they choose to continue the relationship, I am not going to start pointing fingers and condemn them out of hand.
