Flying tickets

I'm currently looking at flying tickets to the US via ebookers (as probably most Europeans use). It's a good service and all and I've used it each time I've visited the US previously. Anyway, this time I'm only looking for a one way ticket. The problem is that most two way tickets are cheaper (from Finland to Boston the lowest I've found is 493e) than the cheapest one way ticket (from Finland to Boston again, I can't find anything below 1100e). How is this possible? Why can't I find cheap one way tickets? Is it possible to purchase a two way ticket and cancel the second part of it (without having to pay extra)? And most importantly, how does this affect my visa. Does the TSA or DHS or whatnot think that I'm leaving the US and thus abandoning my visa or equal if I have a two way ticket they day I enter the US? This really confuses me . It's not that I couldn't afford the more expensive one way ticket, it's just that I don't want to pay at least 1100e when I've previously succeeded in visiting the US two ways for less than 1000e .

 I know how you feel.... and I am doing it for 3 of us (myself and 2 of my kiddos) flying from Australia to the USA... it works out at around $2000 (thereabouts Aus - aka $1800 USD) for a ONE way ticket, BUT it is ONLY $2500 (thereabouts $Aus - aka $2250 USD for a return)... totally bites.. but unfortunately that seems to be the way it works... But let me tell you, if they have a promotion where the "return" ticket is the same price (or just above) a one way ticket, then that is exactly what we will book, and then forfeit the return version.. if you kwow what I mean (kwim?)

have a GREAT day

There is no reason you can't buy the 2-Way ticket. It won't cause any problems.

You might want to call the airlines ticketing office, instead of a broker. I was having the same issue with arranging Ann's tickets out of Manila to USA, but when I called United Airlines, they gave me a price that was lower for the one-way. Round trip was going to be about $1500, the one-way ended up being about $1100. Not 1/2 of a round trip, but $400 is still worth the phone call.

If it's going to be, it's up to me!

Dear WACKO:

It's standard airline practice to make one way tickets almost more (and yes, more sometimes, than a round trip). It applies to all destinations in the world.

I can only suggest:

1) You try to find a ticket with a special fare basis that will refund your return tip (hard to do)

2) Buy a round trip ticket with low penalty to change return date (maybe you could use it to visit relatives back home later)

3) Whatever ticket you have does not affect your visa....Customs and immigration does not care if you have a return ticket when you have a permanent visa. They only care about the visa.

If you buy a round trip ticket, it is critical that you use the outbound leg. So only buy a ticket with an itinerary that originates the same place the trip does.

I know but out of curiosity, I visited the website of the airline (Icelandair in my case) and i found one way tickets from Paris to Minnesota for €250, when a round trip ticket is above €500.

So look everywhere.

I'm also personally preferring Icelandair, I think it's the best. If you fly from Finland to say Boston it tends to be about 2h from Helsinki to Amsterdam (or London or Paris) and 7h from there to Boston. With Icelandair you tend to get flights 4h from Helsinki to Reykjavik and 5h from Reykjavik to Boston. It splits the journey rather nicely. The only down side is that Reykjavik airport has almost no bathrooms at all. Then again, this is a minor fault in comparison to the impossibillity of landing at London and the harsh security controlls you may witness when arriving in the US with an Amsterdam flight.

I found a trip from Stockholm to Boston and back for just 351e, I wish I too could find even cheaper one way tickets. I'm willing to pay up to 150e more if I can just go thru Iceland in comparison of going thru London, Amsterdam or Paris .

Hi,

I in India have beeen expereincing various things. As this is my first outbound intended journey of my life. After talking to all cute girls over the phone ( at times men tooo )..... I find you have to reach out every where. In India we tend to get really good deals over the travel agent as compared to Online ticketing giving cheaper fairs in the West. So it depends. Economy booming and many flights are flying in and out of India. I use the net to just Get the base prices. At times I have seen Online prices really jacked up after I checked them up with the airline directly.

I am still locked horns over my booking of my ticket. I dont know when will I do.... I hope I am doing right by booking a ticket before my interview. I have decided to book my ticket 7 days after my interview date.

buy the return ticket and toss it in the trash once you arrive in the US (or keep it for emergency safe keeping)

I found almost all one ways extremely expensive when shopping the airlines. But when I shopped Expedia.com the price of the ticket dropped from $2100 to $722 for a one way fare. I purchased my wife's e-ticket in the US and she picked it up in the Ukraine.

Icelandic Air replied to me. They said that they don't sell one way flying tickets, except in business class, at all, because there's less problems that way. I guess it's because of VWP or other equal programs and because practically everyone who flies as a tourist does want to fly back to their home too. They just adviced me of picking the cheapest two way ticket I could find and forget the return part of it :). Works rather well really. The one I'm thinking about buying is 657 from Finland to Boston via Iceland :). It's more expencive than the cheapest one (493e) but definitely worth it :).
