I'm very worried - potentially huge problem with my birth cert.

Hey guys,

I have my K1 interview coming up on Tuesday. I have everything in order and ready to go, but I was reviewing the paperwork and made a discovery that made my heart jump. It appears that my birth certificate might not be adequate. I guess when I read "birth certificate" I just skipped over it because I already have one from when I was born. However I noticed that they want one that states BOTH my parents names. Mine doesn't, it just has my name.

I really don't know what to do. It takes 15 days to get a new "long version" of a birth certificate, and Im suppose to fly to Montreal on Tuesday. Will this totally mess up my interview? Will the make me fly back again?

I'm totally devastated that something so trivial could mean I get rejected - especially after all the though, work and money we've put into this application.

Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-Andrew

Andrew, I would go to your nearest place where you submit to get your Lon form BC, and tell them the situation. I am not sure if they will be open on Monday, but it's worth a shot.

Barring that, take all that you have and when you go to Montreal I am sure you can just mail it into them later on when you receive it. If you have any other paperwork that shows both your parents' names and signatures I'd take that too. Anything. Maybe call the hospital where you were born and check there too.

I'm sure it'll be ok, you'll just need to ask them what you can do to expedite the visa.

I don't want to freak you out... but someone in line in front of us in Vancouver last week said she had to come back because of a missing piece of paperwork...

Is there anyway you can get them to fax you the paperwork... maybe an old school you went to has a copy... what about your parents?

Honestly, call your consulate.... see what they say... there's no point in making the trip to Montreal if they're going to have a problem with it... explain your situation and see if you can go, have your interview, and send them the birth cerificate once you get the long-form... maybe they'll just hold onto to your passport and visa and they can send it to you once they have the long-form birth certificate!

Good luck, I hope it all works out!

Which Prov are u in? I know Sk can spit one very quick!! I'm sure if you got n the phone and explained the situation, they can assist you

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Thank you for your comments all,

I managed to find my baptism certificate with my parents name, and monday I am going to go to the hospital and get a birth document from them. Hopefully it will all work out after I explain the situation - Im sure they've ran into it before.

I'll post after my interview to say how it goes in case someone else has a similar concern in the future.

Thanks for your good wishes,

-Andrew

Not a birth cert, but birth records. Apparently there is an office there that has them.

And as per the question above - Im from Thunder bay, Ontario. Have to send away for the birth certs as far as I know - most likely they'd be closed on Easter Monday anyhow.

Oh well, I'm sure things will work out.
