I just called our local SSA office and they told me there hasn't been any activity on my husband's case and that it is updated every two weeks. Should have an update at the end of the month which is when his next two weeks are due.

Augh!!

Im from California. My SS card arrived less than 3 weeks after we applied under my married name.

There doesn't appear to be much consistency in how they're handled, but my situation is similar to the above. I applied for mine in my married name 3 weeks after arriving in the US and 2 1/2 weeks after getting married. I was told that it would arrive in about 10 days, and it arrived in 11 days. (The 10th day was a Sunday.)

Aye, my timeline for my SSN is similar to yours. 4 weeks after entering the US, 3 weeks after getting married. Got it 8 days later. It was one of the easiest parts of the process for me.

Hi all. It has been 4 weeks since my husband's POE, and he still hasn't received his SS#. I checked out the SSA website, and it had a whole page dedicated to immigrants who apply for a SS# on the immigration paperwork. This is what my husband did. Anyway, on the website it says that you should call the toll free number for SSA if you don't receive your card within 3 weeks. After waiting on hold for 20 minutes, my husband finally got through to a representative. She told him that it takes 12 weeks to receive the social security card! I took the phone away from my husband, and told the woman what I read on the website. She told me that it takes 3 weeks for American citizen replacement cards, and that immigrant cards take 12 weeks.

If a person age 18 or older checked off on the DDS-230 to be assigned an SSN and has not received the card within 3 weeks, you need to head into an SSA office with your passport and MRIV and birth certificate. Calling the 800# is a waste of time, because 1 they probably have no idea what you are talking about, 2 if you have been assigned an SSN they aren't supposed to give it out over the phone and 3 if you haven't been assigned an SSN or have a pending application from the DS-230 check off you will need to submit an application at an SSA office.

Now once you submit an application at an SSA office it's possible to be waiting 12 weeks, just depends on how long it takes to verify your status. If you are lucky they can do it while you are in the office.

My wife's arrived within a week of applying as well as my stepson's. It's a bit late for you, but the easiest way is to first apply for a SS# in your maiden name, prior to AOS and before your I-94 expires. Then apply for a new card with your married name once you have your marriage license. Because you applied with your married name, they have to do the extra verying of who you were with your maiden name and then your married name...in effect they are having to do 2 processes before issuing you a card, which is why the delay.

It really shouldn't matter which name you use to apply with if you have a marriage certificate, but a lot of people at SSA office don't know the POMS procedure and start making up stuff when you have K-1 status and apply with your married name, like telling people they now have to apply for a K-3 visa.

RM 00203.210 C. Procedure - Immigration Document as Evidence of Legal Name

When an alien applies for an SSN card, SSA presumes the name on the immigration document is the legal name unless the applicant presents evidence of a legal name change (e.g., marriage) that occurred after the immigration document was issued.

RM 00203.210 Changing Numident Name Data:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203210

RM 00203.735 Requesting Online (Primary) Verification By SAVE:

http://web.archive.org/web/20051002025945/.../lnx/0100203735

If the applicant has changed his/her name after an immigration document, i.e. I-94, was issued, e.g., married and is now using the married name, but has not obtained a corrected immigration document showing the new name; this is not a name discrepancy for enumeration purposes, i.e. SAVE clearance, if the applicant can provide an acceptable legal name change document to establish the new name.

RM 00203.735 was removed from the SSA Website as sensitive procedure and it has a new RM 00203 section number, but it still reads the same.

My problem was that I did not wait 2 weeks after entering the US,which you should do (did not know that then)

If you go to the SSN office earlier than that, they have to "do it manually" etc. which really sucks!!!

Anybody else out there that did not wait the 2 weeks,if so how long did it take until you had it???

The two weeks thing isn't really necessary if the SSA office does what they are supposed to do. If you apply before you have been here 10 days and you don't verify through the initial SAVE verification the office is supposed to wait until you have been here 10 days and try it again before going to the next step of the verification process.

Have you gone back to the office to see if they tried to verify your status again through the initial SAVE verification and if that didn't work, submitted the secondary electronic request and if that came back requesting to see your documents has a G-845 been sent to the verification office along with a copy of your documents?

For those of you who went into an office to apply for, or re-apply for your SSN, I have heard that they will give you your new SSN #, and you just have to wait for the card to arrive in the mail. Is that so? (once they enter you into the system, are they able to give you a number right away?)

Not sure what you are asking, but if you have been assigned an SSN, any SSA office can tell you the number without having to wait for the card to arrive in the mail.

If you have been assigned an SSN it will remain your number throughout your lifetime and you are issued a replacement card with the same number if you haven't received the original card within 14 days of the date the card was issued.

With Enumeration At Entry three things can happen:

1. The information is not transmitted to SSA and you have to go into an SSA office to apply

2. It partially transmitted and there will be a pending SSN application. If the reason it didn't fully process can be corrected you will be assigned an SSN and issued a card. Otherwise you will need to submit an application at an SSA office

3 Everything works and the SSN card is mailed to the same address as the I-551 card.

The employee there was really nice and helpful with my husband's questions. She looked up his passport info on the computer, and found that he hasn't been entered in the system yet. It will be 5 weeks on thursday since his POE. She told us that she couldn't do anything right now, but that if he doesn't receive a social security number in the mail by his 8th week, he should come back to the office to apply for one.

BS if he's been here 5 weeks and no SSN has been assigned or application is pending she should have told him to submit an SSN application now.

K-1 status and having checked off on the DS-230 with an immigrant visa are totally different with what you need to do about getting an SSN. With a K-1 you need to go into an SSA office ASAP after getting here to apply, with the DS-230 process you need to wait 3 weeks to see if the SSN is assigned and card is issued before going to an SSA office to apply.
