Best Proposal's Ever

Evan & I have been engaged for almost 3 years now - Since we have different memories of the event, here's the story according to each of us.

Enjoy.

EVAN'S VERSION:

Carly and I have been dating since January of '05, and we'd been discussing marriage since slightly after that (for the record, we've known each other significantly longer than that). I knew that I wanted it to be special, but I was kind of strapped for cash and I didn't have much time to work on things. The next time that I'd be seeing her was slightly after Valentine's Day, so I figured I could use that as an excuse to take her out for a nice dinner and make up a good gift without her getting suspicious (the proposal was to be a total surprise).

I went ring shopping first off around the middle of January to find the perfect ring. She'd been wanting something with either pave diamonds or pretty filigree work, but all of the rings that had the look she wanted had very detailed bands to go with it, which wouldn't work (since we're following some Jewish traditions in our wedding plans). However, at one jewelry store I found a ring that had a slightly Art-deco feel, but was also very modern. A bridge of channel-set diamonds accented the center stone, but still let it look some-what traditional.

Then I set about finding a unique way to present my message. I decided that since music was a big part of both of our lives I'd try to make a mix CD of songs that meant something to us both as a couple. Once I got to thinking about it, I decided that it would be even more special if I was to perform/record the songs as opposed to just downloading them from iTunes. I talked to one of my friends about it who plays guitar, and he said he'd be happy to help out. We took advantage of my job at a radio station to use the recording studio there and started working on the CD.

It took almost all of our free-time for about a month (we could only record after work, often staying at the station until 3am). It made it really tough, since I couldn't tell Carly what I was working on, and she was becoming somewhat unhappy about the amount of time I was spending with my friend (time that I couldn't really account for). However, after countless nights of recording, we finally had a near-professional cd with 3 tracks: "Grow Old With You"-Adam Sandler, "Vindicated"-Dashboard Confessional, and "our song" which is "To Be With You"-Mr. Big. I finished up the cd by using Illustrator and Photoshop to create a label for the cd and a cover with a glowing wedding band and a Hebrew quote that my fiancee has always said she'd like to have engraved on her wedding ring.

Fast forward to the Friday I proposed: Carly'd just flown in the day before, and we were in Columbus, OH for some shopping and a nice dinner. I had picked out what I was told was one of the best sushi restaurants in town, with a modern atmosphere and good food to be followed up with drinks at a tapas bar down the street.

We had a great time and enjoyed some top-shelf sake (maybe a bit more than I'd intended to drink that night ). After the tapas bar, we cabbed back to the hotel where I told her I'd finally give her the present I told her I'd made for her (she thought I was fairly broke, so she was expecting a painting). However, I presented her with the CD which she really loved. Then, I told her I had one last bit to the present, although it was probably small and lackluster next to the CD. I had her close her eyes, and then when she opened them, I was one knee asking her to be my wife. I don't think it set in what was happening until she realized that I referred to her by her full-name (I always said that's how she'd know I was proposing).

I'll never forget what she said as I slipped the ring on her finger, when she looked at me with tears welling in both our eyes: "You're joking, right? Wait, is that thing real?!"

Once she got over the initial shock, she of course said yes, and we actually started compiling wedding ideas that same week.

CARLY'S VERSION:

Evan forgot to mention a few details, which led me to believe that he was merely insane, and not about to propose.

We had been great friends since July 2004, right around the time that my ex-bf passed away in a car accident while I was working at a summer camp. Since I came home in August, the longest we've gone without talking is 3 days.

We finally met up for New Year's, and he swept me off my feet. I knew there was way more there than I ever wanted to admit. In fact, his first proposal was 2 days after we had officially started dating. My response? I promptly asked him to pull the car over so that I could throw up. Another thing, I had once told him that if he proposed when I was undressed, I'd immediately say no.

I knew I wanted to marry him, but he had also told me that he wouldn't be able to afford a ring until July, and maybe not until November, which upset me greatly, but there was nothing I could do about it. Then he started spending tons and tons of time with one of his friends until like 2 a.m., and not tell me why. I had no idea that he had already bought me a ring, especially since he told me that he was painting me something for my V-Day present.

I fly down to West Virginia on February 17th, after having the worst airport experience EVER. We get back to his apartment, and he asks me, "If I tell you where your gift is and not to look in that room, will you?" And I'm like, "I'm curious, so yeah, I will." He starts carrying a cooler with my gift inside everywhere: to school, to the bathroom, etc. I'm thinking he's insane, because it's just a painting. We drive down to Columbus the next day, and right before we leave, he asks me to bring my Discman so that if I fall asleep early, he'll have something to do in the hotel room without waking me up.

5 hours later, we're getting ready to go out for dinner: first to Haiku for some sushi, then to the Burgundy Room for some Tapas and champagne. While we were at Haiku, Evan's favorite band, The Postal Service, comes on, and he starts tearing and talking about what a perfect night this is, and how everything's coming together perfectly. At Burgandy Room, the waiter asked us if we were celebrating something special, and Evan all of a sudden got super-paranoid and agitated, and was like, "No, not at all, I don't know what we could be celebrating." Most women would probably realize something was up; not me, I just thought he was insane.

We get back to the hotel room, and I start taking off my clothes to slip into PJs, and Evan starts flipping out, repeating over and over, "put your clothes back on!!!" I ignored him, but kept my earrings on with my pjs to maintain some effect of what I had been wearing previously. He tells me that I had been very good, and that I could have my present, and to pull out my discman. He shows me the CD which I thought was beautiful, and half-way through listening to it, I start to cry. He's like, "Are you crying?" and I thought he was making fun of me, so I stopped. Finally, he tells me to close my eyes and that he has another small gift to give me.

I open my eyes, not even noticing he's on one knee. He says my first name, then my middle name, with me kissing him between each name, because I have no idea what's coming, and then he says my last name, at which point I start freaking out, because the fact that he's proposing all of a sudden becomes very clear to me. Evan went on about how much he loved me, asked me to be his wife (to which I said yes), and slipped a beautiful ring on my finger. Because I'm such a tactful person, the next words out of my mouth were "Is it real?"

It sounds so much sweeter the way he tells it.

Mine is not romantic at all! The stories told here are all so sweet!

Ok, Luis and I had been dating for about 2 years when we started realizing we'd have to end up married to be able to be together, don't even remember who brought it up first, but it was a subject we had discussed quite a few times, if we got married where we'd live and all of that.

Anyway, one day we were chatting online and I typed in "Will you ever ask me to marry you?" and he said "Yes" and I said "Ok, I want it to be a surprise" and we laughed about it since I was already making a request. That was in sometime in 2005. In the next trip we went to this beach and spend a couple of weeks there and he said it was so romantic and so perfect he wished we could stay there and live together forever and be married already. So I repeated the question "When will you ask me to marry you?" and he said he wanted to ask my dad's permission first. The thing is dad is always away and we were still studying in college as well, so it had to be arranged, so coincide the 1st trip he made to Brazil that he'd be able to be there at the same time as my dad and when we had plans made. So we decided the trip would be December 2005, when we'd be all spending New Years together.

Now, dad works with gold and we wanted our rings to be made out of dad's gold, so obviously dad supplied the gold to me before the trip so I could have the rings made in time for Luis to arrive for the trip. Luis is all full of honor so he said he'd pay for the gold and dad said that was the right thing a man would do, so when Luis arrived he was supposed to first pay for the gold, then ask dad's permission, then ask me. I know, not romantic at all, but the paying part would be done through me, to give to mom, to put in dad's wallet, not so direct.

Well, Luis arrives in Brazil and tells me he left all his money behind, he was so sad and frustrated, so we had to wait days until the money could be wired to him, and he was all embarrassed that everywhere we went I was paying, but it was the holidays, he was staying at my house, we were all going out together and dad wouldn't have let him pay anyway, but he was embarrassed. The money ended up being wired directly to dad's account, so we actually just took out the part of the money that wasn't for the ring, except by then New Years had already passed and dad was about to go travel again for work.

So on my b-day morning, Jan 3rd 2006, I hear Luis in the kitchen with mom and dad, and then the whole family coming my direction with Luis in front with the ring on hand, he looked so embarrassed it was cute, he almost didn't ask, since first he smiled and nodded like "There! It's done" so mom said "Go on, NOW you can ask" and he asked and kissed and hugged and got hugs from the entire family, that night we went out to dinner to celebrate the engagement and my b-day as well.

It was very set up, but it was so sweet that he asked my dad, I was proud of him.

Btw, I didn't mention before, but my dad is very strict, general like, and people are usually intimidated by him (even though Luis is A LOT taller than dad).

OK so we need to seriously look into the fact that our fiances may be related..mine alwayss says he has a big head. And I have another Ghanaian friend who says the same thing.

What is it with these Ghanaian boys  ?

You see, when I told you that they have the same side profile...you thought I was buggin' out. But I tell you...you never know

I have jokes on my fiance's head size ALL the time. I crack up laughing and then he starts laughing too! I tell him I hope our children don't take after him with his head, because delivery is going to be painful

I wrote Tik a poem to propose to her (I'm cheesy, I know):

I watch you while you're sleeping and think to myself

I've never seen anything more beautiful in this world

I honestly love you so much and words can't truly describe my feelings

But I will try

One moment spent with you makes me happier than everything else in this world

You may not realize since I don't smile often

But you can see it in my eyes when I look at you

My eyes will never lie to you and neither will I

Thinking about the day I have to leave

I can't help but feel that I can't survive even a day without you

But then I remember that you have the same feeling for me

And this fills me with an indescribable content

When I grow old and die, I want you to be there at my side

There is nothing in this life I'm more sure of than this

The day I have to leave I'm sure I'll be very sad

But I know that our love will last forever

I'll always love you as long as you let me, Tik

Please be mine

She read it, said she loved me, I said I know and I asked if she still wanted to marry me. She said yes and the rest is history, here we are missing each other incredibly.

Cute thread!

My husband had told me early in our relationship he wasn't really thinking about marriage - that what we had was fun and all but marriage hadn't crossed his mind.

Then he waffled a couple of months later and said he was starting to think he might like to get married.

So we sort of left things like that. He came to visit me and after he'd been here about three days, we took everybody out of town for a little shopping trip. The kids had gone on in the mall, and we were sitting in the car just talking. I don't really remember the conversation but there was something very emotional going on - maybe our online relationship was becoming very real and the intensity was knocking us over - I don't know. But I remember blurting out "I'm asking you to marry me."

He just looked at me kind of stunned and didn't answer.

Two days later, back at my house, we were doing something together on my computer. I had gone out of the room for something and when I came back, he pulled me close to him and sat me down in his lap. He kissed me, then looked me straight in the eyes and said "Yes, I will marry you".

So that's how it goes with a confirmed bachelor and a single mom.

Awww, so sweet! I posted mine here the evening it happened. (As soon as I was able to type coherently again  ) We had been talking about getting married and who was moving where when he made a realization. Here it is for those that missed it plus an update: He proposed online...

Jonathan(12/14/2006 4:00:35 PM): y'know - I kinda get the feeling I've forgotten something here...

Vikki (12/14/2006 4:00:48 PM): as long as we have copies of everything, then all we would need then is a copy of the marriage cert to send off

Jonathan (12/14/2006 4:00:50 PM): oh yeah, that was it!

Jonathan (12/14/2006 4:01:01 PM): Vikki, I love you and want to be with you forever...

Jonathan (12/14/2006 4:01:05 PM): will you marry me?

Jonathan (12/14/2006 4:01:22 PM): figured maybe I should ask

Vikki (12/14/2006 4:01:33 PM):

Jonathan (12/14/2006 4:01:45 PM): since we're planning the wedding and all

Vikki (12/14/2006 4:01:54 PM): he he yeah

Jonathan (12/14/2006 4:01:59 PM):

Vikki (12/14/2006 4:02:00 PM): Yes I will marry you

Jonathan (12/14/2006 4:02:12 PM): oh man, now I've got a #######

then a few minutes later:

Jonathan (12/14/2006 4:07:19 PM): of course, this still doesn't *really* count I guess...

Jonathan (12/14/2006 4:07:26 PM): gotta wait till I can do it in person

Jonathan (12/14/2006 4:08:00 PM): but what the hell - guess it kinda formalises things :)

That's right, he popped a ####### when he popped the question.

He did propose in person later. I went to visit him for 5 weeks this past spring. The morning of my flight we took our last shower together so I had left my rings on the nightstand. I come out of the bathroom and he cuts a loud and horrendous fart (romance, aye?) He grabs my engagement ring (he had ordered it online and had it shipped to me at Christmas) gets down on one knee, and at this point my eyes are burning and my stomach's turning. I pushed him  and said "Oh hell no, I don't want to remember this moment as the time I nearly suffocated with your rank fart!" We moved it over to the other side of the room (which wasn't much better, was that bad) He got down on one knee and said, "Vikki I love you and want to be with you forever. Will you marry me?" I said yes. he slipped on the ring, we kissed and I ran to open the windows.

Sure these stories seem a bit ribald but that's just the way we are, we fit each other so well that looking back, I wouldn't have had it any other way :) (ok with less fart smell maybe...)

Ours was similar to this, remove the IM and put some action into it and it turns in to something we won't share with the grandkids.

This is a great thread.....

My husband proposed to me on Christmas Day. We (my kids, my parents, my grandma, his kids that were in on it, a couple of his brothers....) were all opening presents. Now Rons kids would not let me open the gift from him until last and made sure that everyone was watching....I was kinda weirded out really. So I open the big box and inside was another wrapped box and so on...got down to a pair of flannel pajama bottoms..#######? Well they were nice of course and they fit. Then I opened the card and inside he had written me a note and asked me to marry him. I immediately said yes.....the older kids wanted me to read it out loud to everyone.... I couldn't so Ron's daughter did and I almost cried again just listening to her repeat those words he had written me. Now keep in mind the Ron does not have a romantic bone in his body...so that was amazing. Somedays I think I am the luckiest girl in the world. Other days I want to send him to his room for being a pain in my butt!!!! Love my man and he rocks my world......
