Immigration Law Questions Answered

KOTV - 11/1/2007 4:55 PM - Updated 11/1/2007 6:20 PM

The police and Sheriff's Office both said Thursday that nothing changed overnight in the way they enforce the laws, but some Hispanics worry about round ups and roadblocks, which deputies and police say is not going to happen.

if the person is legal ... what's the worry? legal persons do carry identification with proper documentation ... yes?

if you're not legal ... now is the time to leave.

Because its not inconceivable that a law-abiding USC might feel aggrieved to be institutionally harrassed based on their ethnic appearance.

is not about being legal or illegal.. but it's well known that the first people cops will pull are hispanics..

it''s about hype and fear ... fear of being caught.

Oh .. are you sure it's well known? Would it be possible to show supporting documentation.

What you are talking about is racial profiling ... and there just might be laws against that.

yea.. I can't see this law working.. how are you gonna do it? some illegals carry legal driver licenses, they also can say they're USC's and they would get away with it.. or how would the cops determine who's lying or not? oh, he looks american he might be a usc, oh, this dude looks foreigner, I don't believe him.. I don't see other way that wouldn't include any kind of racial profiling

the same TV station had another article talking to various law enforcement agencies after the law passed (I've been trying to track it down on the website but haven't so far, sorry). Many of them stated that they have been getting a ton of calls from people giving names of who are illegal in their community and expecting them to go out and arrest them. They were like "ummm, not our job, that's not what the new law is for! Go call the feds".

I'm more worried about the local joe blow blowing this law out of proportion, as opposed to law enforcement. At the same time, can anyone feel their civil liberties slowly being eroded away?? I don't carry everything with me at all times for no reason!

This could have an interesting impact ... the fed being told where the illegals are .... and the illegals get removed. Wow ... what a concept. Of course if the illegal is really legal ... it won't be hard to prove. If at home ... they should have documentation. I do ... and copies. Do you?

And ... if the fed refuses to act ... there is an election soon.

Illegals ... or invaders of a sovereign country ... they will be treated appropriately and deported.

I didn't know my husband was out of status until the week before we got married.

And at that point, I didn't really care. (And no, he never lied to me, I just never asked. I didn't care.)

Sure glad we don't live in Oklahoma. Because it seems like this is going to affect legal immigrants in a bad way, too.

Well right now, the mantra is:

"The Tulsa County Sheriff's Office says the only Hispanic people who need to worry about being deported are the ones who are here illegally and are caught committing a crime." (as quoted from the kotv website)

I'm still carrying around all my paperwork everywhere I go. ;)

Exactly! Illegal is illegal. Why should being here longer make it okay? If a burglar breaks into someone's summer cottage and spends the whole winter there, does that make him less guilty than if he just grabbed the goods and left?

Good point. It would be like a thief saying "well I have broken into the same house for 10 years now so technically I should be allowed to live there.."

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Not exactly your point - but there is such a thing as squatters rights...

Because it seems like this is going to affect legal immigrants in a bad way, too.

This is the BS propaganda that illegal immigrants are trying to use. That they are the same as legal immigrants. BS!! They are free loaders who are trying to jump the line rather than wait their turn, like everybody else.

Common sense suggests that if the congress was to give Amnesty to illegal immigrants and required DHS to process them, this would heavily delay all other visas. Probably talking years here..

Thanks for the smartass remark, but as you can see, I said I didn't know until the week before we got married. Obviously I know now, and since we paid a couple thousand dollars to get his status fixed, obviously I care now. Nice job reading.

Not that knowing his legal status when I met him would have changed the way I felt about him.

Point is, if I was dumb enough to live in OK (thank God I'm not) now I'd be in trouble for moving in with my boyfriend because they'd just assume I knew.

And just because OK passes this doesn't mean other states will follow ... look at the NYS governor who wants to loosen the restrictions on driver's licenses, making it easier for an illegal to get a NYS driver's license.

I don't want illegals to have amnesty, I want the FEDERAL government to do their job. I'm not saying there shouldn't be any laws against illegals, I don't think they should get public assistance, driver's licenses, any of that. But every step my husband takes he shouldn't have to prove himself, and I as a US citizen shouldn't have to prove myself - being dark skinned he gets stopped by police all the time, so what next? They cart me off the county jail because I have an ethnic name?

Pfft.

Psh, why?

I knew we'd have to do AOS, regardless of whether he was out of status or in status. So we did, and were approved in less than 2 months.

Not really a big problem.

And maybe it's not cool...but it's not somewhere I'd ever want to live :o So oh well. Sorry if I offended but I can't take it back.

Sorry dev...you know I love you buttt it's just how I feel.
