What was the intent of this by the OP'er? Another tedious II debate?

Perhap the intent was to point out Oklahoma's new tough law that targets people who are illegally.

at least that's what I get from the TITLE.

###### clever aren't you........... have you actually got anything to add to the debate?

The new law restricts the ability of illegal immigrants to obtain government IDs or public assistance. It also gives police authority to check the immigration status of anyone arrested, which can lead to deportations.

Checking the immigration status of anyone arrested, eh? So, what if you don't have an immigration status because you were born here? Are you going to have to prove that too?

Mainly I'm just wondering how this anti-illegal immigrant law is going to affect regular Joe Blow Americans.

From what I've experienced, Oklahoma is a rather bad place to live. Tattoos are illegal and their roads suck, too. Are they EVER going to finish redoing that stretch of I-35 just north of Oklahoma city and south of Kansas? I swear to god, they've been working on it since I was 6.

1) What debate?

2) Good for oklahoma?

Arizona has a similar law, which I have mentioned several other times, where those who cannot prove their legal presence in the US are not allowed state funded benefits.

Ain't nothing wrong with that...but I do see something wrong with making it a felony to "provide transportation", employment or (in all likelihood) interact with people whose legal immigration status you haven't ascertained. That creeps me out to no end.

Well, I think the key word is 'knowingly' but now that I think about it more, I'd have to agree with the whole 'giving transport' thing...

Edited to clarify that I agree in that it's creepy

Yeah, Arizona's law isn't that invasive, only denies state funded benefits (i.e. in-state tuition, free ESL classes, food stamps).

I expect for that reason it won't stand up in court. Are we going to require bus drivers to become immigration experts? The law sounds like they'd be required to check for papers before letting someone board. (You can't get out of saying 'I didn't knowingly let an illegal on my bus' by saying "I didn't ask for ID.") Make sure you carry your AOS paperwork with you...

Plus, it's a little bizarre that it would be a felony for the U.S. citizen while the illegal worker likely won't face any penalty over deportation (if that.)

I think denying benefits & such is proper, but the rest of it seems unlikely to help.

my thoughts are that is aimed at the ones who transport the illegal around knowing that the illegal is......illegal. simply giving a ride to a hitchhiker won't put one in that position as one's status in the states isn't printed on their forehead - it's only gained thru conversation and familiarity with the individual.

Oklahoma is a relatively poor state; their tax dollars should go to those who have the right to be here. Their new law is only allowing their authorities to do what the old federalies should be doing - define and enforce the boundaries between the privileges of citizenship/legal residency and the negative impact of illegality. It's always interesting, tho, how the open borders type immediately equate Latino communities with illegals. I'm hoping that that will become their latest mistake; their first was thinking that marching in the streets with Mexican flags would make Americans roll over. Instead, it woke them up. More power to Oklahoma!

It's not yet clear how the law will be enforced. Illegal immigrants in Oklahoma fear police will use the law for roundups of anyone working and living in the state illegally.

well hello, that's what it's intent is ;)
