Hi everyone,

Would anyone know if it is compulsory to stay in the US for the two year period (to achieve permanent residence) after completing the adjustment of status? My fiancee Shilpa and I (the beneficiary) plan to return to the UK as soon as she can complete her university degree, which could be completed before then and As such, we may not need to stay in the US for the whole two years. Thanks in advance for any help :)

This is what you need to do once you have your green card:

Maintaining Your Permanent Resident Status

There are some things you must do to maintain your permanent resident status. These are also important to remember if you plan to apply for U.S. citizenship in the future.

• Don’t leave the United States for an extended period of time or move to another country to live there permanently.

• File federal and state income tax returns.

• Register with the Selective Service, if you are a male between the ages of 18 and 26.

• Give your new address to DHS.

The first one is very important as being away from the country for extended periods of time could be taken as abandonment of LPR status and your GC could be revoked.

Read here for more details.

Thanks for both of your responses :) However, I just wish to clarify that what i really wanted to know was whether it was compulsory to stay in the US long enough to gain permanent resident status in the first place, not how I am supposed to keep it. I hope that clears things up a bit :P

No

woah... wait a minute! LPRs have to register for selective service? That's slightly F^cked! I mean, I know to be eligible for Financial Aid (for school) USCs have to register (males do anyway) but LPRs do, too?

So they can be drafted to fight in a war without even being a citizen of this country? I just don't get that. At all.

Not just LPRs....

Are illegal alien males required to register?

Yes. All immigrant alien males, other than those admitted on nonimmigrant visas, must register, whether or not they have a green card.

(See also Who Must Register - Chart.)

WHO MUST REGISTER? - CHART

PS: don't assume that because they register (as required by law) that they are eligible for a draft, if there is a draft again (which there is not now), or eligible to be enlisted. Registering is not the same thing as getting drafted, or enlisting.

There are too many good things to pass up by not registering. Really.
