Gas leak in my apartment

Ok so on halloween i come home and the entire apartment was full of the smell of gas. As i work for a gas marketer i immediatly called GRU and told them we have a gas leak, and then i called my maintence and he came actually faster than GRU. Well they both stated they thought the gas was coming from the dryer so they turned the gas off from the dryer and stated that they will come back in the morning and fix it. So yesterday morning they come back and realise the gas leak was from the stove, which they left the gas running on all night, i kept all the windows open bc i was nervous about my kids and me and hubby not waking up in the morning. Anyway the maintence guy showed up first and realised it was the stove, said the hose from the gas line was ripped, they replaced it and said everything was fixed and we were fine. i still didnt feel safe so i called GRU and told them what the maintence did. they were pissed. So they came back out, and did a leak test. they found that they did fix THAT small leak but there was another major leak in the pipes UNDER MY KITCHEN FLOOR. anyway GRU stated they are unable to locate it bc its not their responsibility to tear up the floor and fix it so to go to the leasing office and make them aware this needs fixed.

so i went to the leasing office this morning and advice them of everything. their response is "OH WOW, we dont even know who to call to have this fixed" my response "i just paid 800.00 in rent yesterday, get someone here today to fix it or ill be putting a stop payment on my rent check" they STILL havent gotten anyone, i spoke to them a few mins ago as im at work and cant be at home to call every 2 secs. and they stated they didnt know what to do, so they called the corporate office. we cant shower, cook or wash clothes, im pissed!

oh GRU did turn off all our gas tho, locked the meter and red tagged it

Stay safe, Tara. If I was you I'd keep phoning and hassling your landlords until they send someone out. This is totally unacceptable, they should be out NOW fixing it. Keep us posted.

#######?? They don't know who to call to have it fixed??? That's crazy!! They should pay for a hotel for you and your family to stay in until they fix the problem. You guys need to be safe and have things like hot water available to you!

Good gracious! Have you called the local housing authority about this? Or hey, try the local news station. That ought to really light a fire under you landlord (no pun intended).

I'm surprised the gas company didnt turn off the gas in the building and just let it be, and left it to the leasing company or owner to handle. Maybe different states have different rules on how to handle.

In IL, I smelled gas coming from my neighbors window, so I called the gas company and said I smelled something funny. They were here in 15 min, along with the cops & fire department. The neighbor was in a retirement home for some months, but left a small window open, from which the smell was leaking. Since they couldn't get anyone to open the door, the fire dept busted the door open (or down should I say). The gas line from the stove was cracked, so they shut off gas in the whole house until it could get fixed. They wouldn't turn the gas back on until they came back out, saw proof that everything was done & retested.

I'm surprised they are letting you still stay in the apartment while a dangerous condition like that exists.

thank god me and hubby can yahoo msg while im at work, they now say the leak is also in the walls and will take a week to fix

well yesterday they stated it was the line in the stove and maintence claimed to have fixed it and stated we are fine bla bla. we couldve flippin died if i hadnt called GRU (our utlity) to come back out.

Not sure how it goes with insurance issues. But if the place is considered in-liveable, can't they flip the bill for the week for you guys to be in a hotel/motel? I'm not sure if this would be covered by the owners insurance, but should be.

They are letting you stay in there despite the gas smell/leak going on? This still shocks me!

The gas was shut off completely in our apartment by the gas company until fixed, so theres no smell or anything. its the them having to rip the walls and floor out, and saying it will take a week

I just spoke to a property manager and he said the apt complex is not necc responsible for finding you alternate accommodation...check your lease...but here's a thought....ask the prop mgr if you can use another apt for cooking/showering.

I checked my lease and in the case of an emergancy and the apartment complex was responsible for it, then it is their responsibility to accomidate us with somewhere to stay. and gas leak and repair was on the list
