I was wondering if anyone here has already gone through the K-3 process for a Colombian beneficiary and could help estimate some times.

  • Once the embassy receives the papers sent by the NVC, how long does it usually take the embassy to send out the packet to the beneficiary?
  • Once the embassy receives the filled out packet (by my wife), how long until the interview date?
I know this info is in the guides as a general approximation, but I was wondering if there were any more accurate time estimates based off people's experience with this embassy.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, you can find them in the Colombian Club thread in the Foreign Embassy forum. There are several people who have gone through Bogotá for K3 and K1 visas who can answer your questions. Also, if you read the thread, you will find out about the shortcuts they've come up with to get a faster interview appointment at the embassy.

Oh, thanks! I never noticed that forum before, let alone the thread.

Seems like I have a lot of reading to do tonight. :)

Thanks again.

Thanks Diana and Brian. I see the shortcut where you just send the forms as soon as possible to the embassy.

I also started to read another thread in the NVC forum about James' shortcut. Talk about getting confused (and a bit scared about having to wait longer). That thread discussion is for people doing I-130's or AOS?

K-1's or K-3's don't go through that process until the SO is already in the U.S., correct?

Man I am so hoping my package gets to Bogotá by the end of next week or I'll probably miss the cut off date for December interviews, meaning I'll have to travel there for Christmas :( (Which I guess would be worse if I couldn't even travel.)

We'll see. By the way, congrats on your interview date Brian. I bless you and I hope everything goes well that day.

Another thing I don't understand though. I was under the impression that the Embassy sends a letter with an interview date. Howcome I see some posts on that thread that say you need to call the DOS?

Felipe,

Don't bother reading James' shortcuts since those are for CR1/IR1 visas and you're going for a K3. The shortcuts you need to use are:

1. Call the NVC every day to find out the date of when they'll be sending your case to Bogotá. Once they give you the date you give it about 2-3 days to arrive. So if the NVC tells you that the case was mailed to the embassy on a Monday, it should arrive at Bogotá by Thursday at the latest.

2. Once it arrives in Bogotá, give them about 2 business days to process it. Don't wait for the embassy to mail packet 3 to your wife because it may never get there. Have her fax it over to them and then mail it via Servientrega to make sure they have it. (You can find packet 3 in the shortcuts found in the Colombian thread I told you about).

3. Once the embassy has packet 3 they will send you and your wife packet 4 which is the interview letter. Again, don't wait until they do so to find out the date, call the NVC or DOS to find out what the date is.

Now keep in mind that interviews for K3 and K1 visas are based on the date the embassy receives packet 3 from the beneficiary. If your wife faxes/sends it before the 15th-16th of the month, she will have an interview for the following month. If she does it after these dates, she will get an interview for the month after that.

You need to call the NVC to find out if they mailed out your case to the embassy already. If they have, your wife has until Thursday to fax and send packet 3 in order to get a December interview. If not, then you're looking at a January interview for sure.

Thank you Diana. You are a blessing.

I did end up sorting out the information I had read was pertinent to CR1/IR1 visas, so thank you for clarifying that. I guess I should definitely be calling the NVC. I thought only K-1's had to keep calling.

My prayer for the past few days has been for us to make the December cut, since I know this current week is the definitive one.

May God's blessings overflow your household, Diana.

- Felipe.

Wow! Just got a letter in the mail from the NVC saying they received the case and will send to the foreign embassy within a week! It's dated November 8th. Hmm, I wonder if they already sent the packet to the embassy in Bogota.

Gonna call, hope they're open.

Thank you Lord!

Ok well I called this morning and it turns out that Bogotá actually received the I-129F packet a week ago. Awesome news. I definitely should have called before.

No worries though, as my wife will be sending packet 3 today by fax and Servientrega.

Good for you! If the embassy receives packet 3 before tomorrow or Friday then you have a good chance of getting her a December interview. Try to call them after she faxes them the paperwork to find out if they indeed received it.

Yeah it's been 253 days since I sent the I-130 package, and still counting... <_<

No interview date yet and it's been over a week since we sent packet 3.

Good luck on your interview, and Merry Christmas to you, too!
