Usually when it expires it expires and would need a new one.

I would check what the mobile provider says - maybe they can reactivate it, or if not maybe there are some new deals...

thanks! though I hate tmobile I saw on their website they're offering 2 free sim cards...I'll probably just get a german one since I'm going to germany since they charge insane rates when you're not in the UK. I was just thinking of stuff for my trip

What provider were you using? I've had Virgin, O2 and Orange sim cards that have stayed active two years after I last used them, so I'm surprised at this. But given your impending trip to Germany, it probably makes sense to get a German one anyway.
