You have missed the point. The idea behind 'welfare queens' is that there are thousands of people lazing around living on welfare because it's some easy life. That's simply false. Yes, you provided an anecdotal example but without context, and without knowing thousands of folks in the same position, it proves nothing.

The 'welfare queen' argument is a fallacy, because living on welfare isn't easy. comfortable or something that most people want to do permanently, why? Because it's not a good life.

I haven't jumped to any huge conclusions about your life except to say, I doubt you are super rich.

i see "welfare queens" nearly every day i go to work... i help to take care of their newly born infants... some of them dont even pretend to be doing anything other than having babies for more checks... parents confide a lot in their nurses/their baby's nurses... i will note that what you think of as a good life might not be the same as someone else (ie a "welfare queen")... many of these women have their hair and nails done weekly (quite elaborately) and wear plenty of "bling"... and seem quite pleased with that...

more anecdotal that wont prove anything, i suppose... but nevertheless, there it is

I'm not sure how this argument took this turn but, IMO, calling welfare recipients, 'welfare queens' because of their appearance is intellectually dishonest at best.

I'm bloody British and I have problems getting understood sometimes. My "favourite" is when I'm asked what dressing I would like on my salad. If I ask for ranch the average server thinks I'm saying "raunch". I don't think Kraft make a Raunchy Dressing, perhaps there is a potential market there for it. *ponders*

Oh god, I have that problem too!! Waitressing is really not the job for someone who can't pronounce the word 'ranch' in a way that people can actually understand. I dread having to say that word! :crying: (Never occurred to me that anyone thought I was saying 'raunch', mind you!! ).

Not only do I fail to pronounce ranch in a way that can be understood, I also fail at water (apparently I say Rarnch and wartah)... I'm cursed with the southern-english "A" I reached the point where if Josh orders a water with his meal and I just say "same" hehe

steven, i thank you for your concern about my intellectual honesty... however, it has nothing to do with their physical appearance... it has to do with spawning young as if a queen bee... at least thats how i see it... but, please notice that i used the term that was used previously in this thread in quotes... its not a term i use freely myself

the comment on their appearance is based on what those women themselves think of as a satisfactory life... many of them see that as a sign of living life well... and, i suppose, a way to attract men... akin to some men wanting to drive a bmw or lexus or whatever other luxury car...

Isn't there a difference between putting your best face on a bad situation and enjoying a good situation?

Despite the people you meet having all this 'finery', I would still doubt that they sincerely consider their lives luxurious, by any standards, or acceptable in the long term. If they are looking to attract a man, maybe it's to get out of this substandard life they are leading?

Despite this, is anyone seriously trying to argue that life on welfare is fun, enviable, living it up? Would anyone prefer to not pay taxes and swap with these people?

To somehow conclude that there are tens of thousands of people content with their lot on welfare, pumping out babies because it's such a good life compared to working and earning a living is still a fallacy whichever way you dress it up.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I understand what you are talking about. I've been around people living on welfare. It's a label that implies women are going out and having babies so they can live like queens while collecting welfare for their children. There are guidelines and rules in place for those who are on welfare. We don't have labels for those who rely on welfare humbly, benefit from it, and manage to get out of poverty....and so we don't talk about them.

exactly... all i was saying is that there are indeed ppl to whom that label applies... its not as if it doesnt exist... i will also say that not everyone on welfare would fall into that category... i also see many women who are rising/have risen out of a welfare situation... and they dont have a 'welfare label' because they arent on it anymore... they are self-supporting members of society... and quite proud of it, to boot... as well they should be

A woman walks into the downtown welfare office, trailed by 15 kids.. "WOW," the social worker exclaims, "Are they ALL YOURS???"

"Yes'am they is all mine," the flustered momma sighs, having heard that question a thousand times before. She says, "Sit down Leroy." All the children rush to find seats. "Well," says the social worker, "then you must be here to sign up. I'll need all your children's names."

"This one's my oldest-he is Leroy." "OK, and who's next?" "Well, this one he is Leroy, also." The social worker raises an eyebrow but continues. One by one, through the oldest four, all boys, all named Leroy. Then she is introduced to the eldest girl, named Leighroy!

"All right...," says the caseworker, "I'm seeing a pattern here..Are they ALL named Leroy?" Their Mumma replied, "Well, yes-it make it easier. When it is time to get them out of bed and ready for school, I yells, 'Leroy!' An' when it's time for dinner, I just yell 'Leroy!' an' they all comes arunnin.' An 'if I need to stop the kid who's running into the street, I just yell 'Leroy' and all of them stop. It's the smartest idea I ever had, namin' them all Leroy." The social worker thinks this over for a bit, then wrinkles her forehead and says tentatively, "But what if you just want ONE kid to come, and not the whole bunch?"

"Ah, that's so easy," said the momma. "Then I calls them by their last names"
