'There's no legal path for them so that's why they are illegal' is really not justification for anything. The law is the law. I suppose I should tell the cop the next time I'm speeding that the law doesn't suit *my* purposes therefore the law is wrong and not me!

But we've all been on this merry go round before, so that's nowt new.

No one said it's justification. What was said is if they had a choice.

Stop bending what I say.

Sorry, that's what I inferred from what you said.

Just so I'm clear...Are you saying that the fact that there's not enough visas to go around for everyone makes their presence here justifiable?

As far as what most of America thinks - I believe that when you discuss any behavior amongst a category of people negatively, you risk pigeon-holing all of them negatively. I fear that much of the negative chatter in the media about illegal immigrants can lead to public policy that will make life for our spouses legally difficult in this nation.

What?!?

Our spouses are LEGAL, there is no way it will become more difficult for them (we have enough hoops as it is). That makes absolutely NO sense.

Have you read the complaints of people trying to get bank accounts, jobs, and driver's licenses? Increase the hysteria over maybe something will help an illegal, and a lot of that stuff gets even harder for the legal immigrants.

It probably doesn't touch an upper middle class, educated Brit any more than it does an accentless Canadian. Personally, for our specific circumstance I'm not worried. But for a lot of people whose spouses are Hispanic or have an accent, passing draconic laws for employers just means the employers won't take a chance on an immigrant.

Sure have! And how much is about not reading the forms? Lots!

J took in the SSN info that Meauxna used to have in her siggy to the SNN office, no problems. J read about what is needed for a Cali DL & FOLLOWED INSTRUCTIONS. J wrote in his cover letter that he was a legal PR. What is so hard about that?

We had a hiccup at the bank but once he showed legal proof he was here, he was fine.

If an employer chooses to pass over an immigrant, without seeing any proof/lack of proof, then I suggest the potential employee look elsewhere. That's called discrimination. ;)

Next?

Based on some comments here - it bears repeating that it is a PRIVILEGE TO COME LIVE IN AMERICA as an immigrant, NOT A RIGHT. You can go home if it's too hard for you. I would go with J wherever he wanted - just to be together. We chose America, warts & all. In turn, he deals with whatever ####### that brings. It's called life.

 stop stop i can't take it any more! i agree with you :help:

Actually, I don't blame illegal immigrants one bit for making my husband's transition difficult! We know the conditions that those crossing illegally face, and have several friends who have crossed illegally. Of course, those we associate with are quietly trying to stay below the radar and go about their lives. And all of the illegal migrants we know would jump at the chance to wait in line for permission to be here legally, but these options just don't exist. There are very few cases in which someone in the family came over years ago, legally, and is now petitioning for their family members to come as well, but the wait is over decades. If you can't feed yourself nor find work in your home country, you don't have decades to wait.

I'd imagine that most people haven't spent ANY time speaking with people here illegally to know why they made the choices they did. If you were in their shoes, what would you do? You can't say, well, I'd do it legally, because there is no way to do so.

I said if there were a legal vehicle for them to come here I believe they would choose that over entering illegally.

PUHLEASE.

That's harsh.

And there isn't. Just like if a 21 year old wants to go live in England/Spain/Italy/etc for a year, YOU CAN'T. You get a job there (legally) or you visit. You don't go illegally just because you want to live there.

If you can't feed yourself nor find work in your home country, you don't have decades to wait.

:crying:

It's true. It's an excuse used over & over. And frankly it's pathetic. (Trying to) tug at heartstrings to 'justify' their illegal status.

I couldn't find a job for awhile, due to changing professions. GUess what? The grocery store is always hiring or a gas station or a farm stand or a yard mowed in your neighborhood. If you need to eat, you WILL find work - no need to cross corders illegally to do so - just cause your friends did it.

Why Puh-lease about my statement concerning feeding yourself being an immediate need? I do understand that the emotional tone might turn people off, so let me put it another way:

If you are unable to meet your basic survival needs in the jobs that are available to you right now, you do not have decades to wait for your petition to be approved.

I do believe you've never been to a third world country if you think that you can just "get a job" that pays enough to live on in Mexico or another place.

so that's supposed to be a good enough reason to go invade another country? from what i've seen about someone crossing the border into the usa, they have to pay someone several thousand dollars for the guide service. surely that several thousand could buy lots of food back home.
