Im gonna be swappin out some pieces in the next month or so. Need a new mobo,ram,vid card.

These new vid cards suck the power, so gotta make sure you have a big enough power supply. Also the next gen DX 10 games will look like ####### on the older vid cards.

I got my eye on this card, its a freakin monster!

So far, visually DX10 games have offered very little visual improvement. The only difference in Bioshock for example is that the particle effects are a bit smoother. Halo 2 would have run fine on XP, but it was locked to Vista and DX10 for marketing reasons.

I used to love 'Elite' on my old Spectrum. So I bought 'Freelancer' a while back. I don't find I have the time to play it, tho. Any other games similar to that I might like?

Hubby is currently playing Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield 2142.

We also have Guitar Hero III (love the song list!).

I stopped playing WoW a few months ago. We are now waiting for Warhammer Online to be released.

I beleive you gotta have a dx-10 compliant card to get the improvements.

Right, but there hardly are any improvements in most games written to use DX10.

I've heard Vista had issues when it first came out - but so far I've not had any problems. Every game I own has installed - except for Silent Hunter III, but that was notoriously dodgy even on XP - because the manufacturers only offered support on a very limited range of specific graphics cards.

i didn't have any problems with sh3, other than a few glitches when it came time to load torpedoes. i think it's more of a programming issue than the card being a problem.

now sh4, whole nuther matter. had to upgrade the card again just so i could play it.

It doesn't work on Vista, at least for me, and Ubisoft doesn't offer support for it - not least because its a 2-3 year old game. The graphics card issue was more of a problem from what I've read - officially the game only supports the specific card chipsets mentioned on the box. It worked on my old PC, but going by the game forums a lot of people have had problems.

P.S. I had that torpedo loading bug as well. Was quite irritating.

Right, but there hardly are any improvements in most games written to use DX10.

I don't know about that so much - the November issue of PC Gamer has a side by side comparison of DX-9 Vs 10 on a number of current and upcoming games. There is a visually noticeable difference - better pixel shading and lighting effects.

World of Warcraft, Total Annihilation (old school ), I have played the single player demo of F.E.A.R....looks AWESOME, my system is barely able to run it though

Supreme Commander looks great (RTS) but again my computer is OLDish Also my Russian isn't good enough for the version I own (officially licensed Russian version of SC, gift from my Brother in law.

Those are the games I play, regularly...I loved Half life 2 and Doom 3!

Thanks for the recommendations. If/when we update my laptop to a newer model, I'll check some of these out. 'Course, by then we hope to have a baby, so I doubt I'll have the time.
