Well all know that videogames turn otherwise normal people into complete psychopaths, who when not stalking school-halls and offices pumping bullets into colleagues and co-workers, can be found lying abed past noon masturbating in their own filth.

Discounting that obvious, well-known truth - what games does everybody play?

We got a new PC the other week and I've been trying out some of the ####### I couldn't run on the old PC. Just started playing F.E.A.R, amazing how cinematic this current generation of games are. Not only fantastic 'bullet-time' action effects right out of The Matrix, but some pretty well-done suspense that isn't that far removed from horror movies like The Ring & Sixth Sense.

They played with that stuff in Doom 3 and Half-Life 2, but this is way and above both of those.

Ahhh, Im into digital crack, Dungeon Keeper 2. Its kinda like The Sims go to hell or something. Its an older game, circa 99, so the graphics arent super-badazz. However it doesnt clog up your machine with number crunching.

Down the list are Moon Tycoon, Roller Coaster Tycoon, and The Sims, because I like having lots of money and being in charge of other people without having to answer for their bullcrap.

And the good old standby, Arkanoid always cures what ails me when the above arent sufficient.

Yeah I just won a copy of that on ebay. Played the original and liked it a lot - the only game experience that captures battlefield chaos in a way that feels authentic. Really immersive.

For some reason they skipped COD3 for the PC and went console only.

Six, If you got the demo, I got some commands you can put into the console that you can have alot of fun with. Hit your tilde key and enter one of the following

Once in game hit the console button "~" same as cod2. Then enter the following commands. Disregard all the quotes of course.

"arcademode 1" then enter.

"arcademode_full 1" then enter.

"seta thereisacow 1337" then enter.

"devmap bog_a" then enter.

The level will restart with a timer and a scoreboard. After these steps, if youd like to unlock all the weapons type into console "give all" it should give you all the available weapons.

The single-player stuff is really worth a look if you've only done the multi-player. The suspense work is really very well done - your character has visual and auditory hallucinations.

Apparently Bioshock is pretty decent too - assuming I can run it with all the details set up. May have to compromis a little there.

I did that with F.E.A.R and the settings it defaulted to were very basic - considering that I have a 256mb Nvidia card. I think some of these new games deliberately start up with minimum settings so as not to crash low-end PCs. In the options it had an auto-detect option that ramped up the details. Oddly enough the performance was much better at higher resolution.

Same thing with Rome: Total War - I was playing that on my old laptop (which 2 years ago was a fairly respectable P4 system). The game automatically detected my graphics card and lowered the detail settings to match (basically halved each of the army units so there are fewer 3d models on the screen). I installed it on this desktop - and each of the army units now has double the men. Makes for some pretty massive battles.

It is pretty creepy - but a real triumph of virtual cinematography. Also the artifical intelligence controlling the enemy soldiers is very sophisticated and completely unpredictable. If shoot at a group of them, they all run and hide - then try to flank you. You get the odd 2-man patrols, but getting past an entire squad is really difficult - they pin you down while sending men round behind you.

I was playing on sunday and one guy burst through an office window in front of me (through the glass) - I killed him, but then got tagged with a grenade by his team-mate. Next time as soon as I shot one of the soldiers - the others that were with him found covered positions in the next room and waited for me to attack them. It really is some very impressive work.
