One way ticket

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone knows what the rules are regarding entering the U.S. on a one-way ticket? My wife and I actually found a ticket that is more convenient and cheaper than buying a round trip ticket. She recently received her Immigrant visa and will be entering the U.S. sometime in January 2008. I called a travel agent who told me that she does have a oneway ticket but that according to some immigration rules, my wife would have to show proof that she departed from the U.S. Now, she's never been here to the States, so that would be impossible. She is immigrating to the U.S. so why would any authority have a problem with a oneway ticket? Please help if it makes any difference, she's from Romania

Don't listen to travel agents because believe me they are not experts on immigration. If she has the correct papers for entering the US she can enter, the return flight would be to ensure she would return which would be for someone who must leave the US. Just tell your wife to speak the truth, she is immigrating to the US. She has all the correct papers for immigrating so she is fine.

If she has an immigrant visa, or dual intent non-immigrant visa (K visas) she can enter the US on a one way ticket.

However some airlines, travel agents, or countries may give you trouble about it. After all, they may make more money with a return ticket, or in the tiny chance, your wife is not admitted, the airline would really have to pay the return fare since you already have with the ticket.
