Why is it our responsibility to protect Israel?

Like Fisch said, Israel has the bomb. They can protect themselves. And besides, why wouldn't M.A.D. work in this case? It's worked between India and Pakistan quite well, military tensions have eased ever since they both went nuclear.

Up until WW2 we hated the Jews too.

I'm not saying 'We' should do anything to Iran. I believe that Israel will send a couple cruise missles to Iran to take care of the issue.

They WILL bomb us? You think that they do not realize that they will be completely, totally, once and for all wiped off the face of the earth if they do? Yes, they WILL if they can. Their president IS a suicidal lunatic. A complete and total whack job. But they would not do it directly. Iran is the #1 supporter of terrorism so all they would have to do is give one of those groups a Nuke and BAM, mission accomplished. I don't think Iran will nuke Israel because they know Israel will blow them off the face of the earth. Iran would be a piece of melted glass. Meanwhile, Iran believes we will never use nukes on them. They have said this many times, in Arabic, of course. They don't spill their beans in English.

One little thing of note: Iran's president is so preocupied with building nukes that he has put more money into it than they can afford and now their economy is collapsing. He may find himself kicked out of office, or worse, if this continues. That is our best hope.

If you guys want to bomb Iran... please look up the term "shahid" on wikipedia or something else, then do a little research on the Iran-Iraq war, then do a check of how well the war in Iraq is going for us right now... then if you still want to bomb Iran.... ask yourself why we haven't bombed North Korea yet.

Iran is years away from having a nuke. Many years. If there's any bombing today or in the near future, it would be for the very same reason we went into Iraq: OIL. Nothing more, nothing less. Thinking about it for a second, oil has more than doubled in price since we went into Iraq. Are you prepared for oil to double in price yet again and have this economy and that of the rest of the world tank over some paranoid suspicion?

Very consistent argument. Iran won't nuke Isreal for the fear of the assured retaliation. But you argue that the assured retaliation from the US means nothing. So, Israel can defend itself against Iran via MAD while we can't. And for all the other nations in the Middle East, Israel needs our protection. Because the assured destruction that Israel can bring to any or all of these nations apparently means nothing to them. But the assured destruction that the US puts out there makes Israel somehow safe against those guys. Why are the Iranians the only ones worried about Israel's nukes and the only ones not worried about ours while the other Middle Eastern nations fear our nukes but apparently not Israel's?

Where have I heard this before?? Oh yeah, back in the day when Iraq was the Number 1 supporter of terrorirms and aboout to send a dirty bomb or even worse one of their multiple nukes to kill us.

Iran is definitely a nation worth keeping an eye on, but it is by no means the only nation run by suicidal maniacs or the only nation supporting terrorists. If we're scared enough to move somewhere safe - I hope your friend has considered the fact that any major city is a possible target and that there are also various military research facilities spread out in the middle of nowhere leaving not many places to move to - than we've proven the terrorists right.

This is not a Democrat vs. Republican issue, you're right. This is about panicking before the fact instead of planning for the worst-case-scenario...

The Jewish voting block is a minor issue and not really existent (there are 6 million or so Jews in the US which is not that many compared to the 150,000,000 other voters), but the Christian right is bolstering the state of Israel because for them it is imperative to keep Islam out of the Holy Land.
