Hi All,

My wife needs an "original" copy of our marriage certificate with translation (for passport). She claims she can't go back to the U.S. embassy to get the "notarized" copy, like we did when I was there. Can I have a translator here (my friend) sign off on the english translation in front of a regular notary? Or does it have to be done at the U.S. embassy in Japan?

P.S. I mailed my "original" copy for the visa application... I figured it should be easy to get a new "original"

You can get it done from a Certified Translator... if your friend is Certified Translator then you can get it done...

You can use anybody you want to translate your documents as long as they are fluent in both languages. Then that person will state that they were responsible for the translation and that they fully understand both languages. And that's it.

This probably wasn't the correct forum to ask. I needed to know if the Japanese Passport Agency would accept a U.S. notarized translation of our Marriage Document. They want this because she took my last name and they want to see how it is spelled. I don't know why they require a notarized translation. She has many documents with my name spelled out, but they refused to take them.

The translated marriage document we got when I was there was one of those fill in the blank type that the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo stamps after my wife signs it in front of them. I KNOW that the Japanese passport agency will take that, but will they take the same fill-in-the-blank document notarized here in the states?

Japan. The marriage certificate is in Japanese.

Then I think you need a Japan specific answer. For this kind of document, a translation certified by a Japanese government sanctioned translation agency may be needed. For China, there is specific local government office that provides certified translation of official government documents. I suspect there is something similar in Japan. Even if USCIS will accept a private translation, the Consulate issuing the visa will have their own expectations for translation of police reports, birth certificates, marriage certificates, etc.
