I think the best part of the article is that it really pressed that the USCIS makes the process of reuniting families unreasonably long and difficult. Granted that security and due process is important but there is lots of room for improvement and I think the article did hit that issue well.

I don't think the article was negative, Devilette. Unfortunately, people who are negative will find ways to interpret it as they see fit, regardless.

Work in PR sometime, you might 'get it'.

actually, dev, i read it the same way you did. it didn't paint us vj'ers in a very good light imo.

:o

we agree! The world is ending!!! ;)

yeah it is kinda cold around here, i think hades froze over

I'm bringing skis and ice skates ... and food & beverage :pop:

The article could have been a little better constructed ...

Although not explicitly negatively...it didn't come across as positive to me. Seemed kind of cold to me. They sucked the love out of the equation somehow..

Not just that, but it failed to talk to anyone who successfully navigated the fiance/spousal visa process.

Well, that I would agree with. Of course, reporters are supposed to be neutral, but it was written in a way that you could tell she pretty much just summed up the interview with Wendy and the two others and did little or no independant research.

And Devilette, I can agree to disagree without telling someone they don't "get it", but you could just as easily have picked out quotes to highlight where it talked about how VJers have met their fiances while vacationing around the globe or the part where it says she forged a friendship with a woman in California in similar circumstances. There are people predisposed to see the whole situation a certain way, and they will see it. Could it have been carefully edited to avoid giving them any ammo to do this? Probably, but I suspect they'd find it no matter what, and that isn't really the reporter's job.

The only thing I really take issue with is this:

Immigration officials offer no single explanation for the growth, but some observers say the Internet -- with its online dating sites, instant messaging and Web cams -- has fueled transnational relationships.

I met my fiance through a mutual friend, but I know a great many couples who met on line and only one met through a dating site---and they live in the same city! Which makes sense. If you use an online forum devoted to one of your interests, you are bound to make friends with people who share that interest, and it is always possible for a friendship to blossom into love. If you are actively looking for someone to date, you are most likely going to look for someone closer to home.

Why would I pull quotes that are positive? I see none in it. I'm voicing that (to me) it's a cold, negative article that paints VJers & Wendy as obsessed people with little else to do than spend hours pining away on VJ - and complaining with others about incompetent gov't - for their foreign fiance/spouse.

He!! may indeed have frozen over as Lisa & Charles agree with me. ;) Yet so do others, so I am obviously not alone in feeling this way.

That statement that any PR is good PR is simply not true. Anyone who has worked in PR/advertising will tell you that. Just look at Britney Spears.

This isn't the first time I've said this Dev....but I agree with you too! The article really isn't very positive at all. Sure it could be worse, but it certainly could be better. The quotes you highlighted earlier in this thread certainly illustrated your point very well.
