Anybody done anything really dumb lately

So Ive just made a lovely dinner for my husband, lasagna and garlic bread. I was too lazy to make the garlic bread on my own, which is pretty dumb in itself because garlic bread isnt really labor-intensive. I bought a pre-seasoned split french loaf from the frozen section. There's instructions on the wrapper, but who needs instructions for bread? I slide it in the oven, straight from the package. It emerges, brown and crusty, mouth-watering aromas fill the kitchen. I sample a bit off the end (just to make sure its okay for hubster to eat, quality control is important, you know). Ahhh toasty and crunchy on the outside, soft warm bread within and..... what the hell is this part? Paper? Who puts paper in bread? What is this, more roughage? Where's that dang-blasted wrapper?! Im sending this one back with a complaint! There was paper baked right into my bread at the factory!!!! And lo, what doth yon mighty wrapper say? "Remove paper from between loaves before baking". Apparently, someone (a great deal smarter than I) thought it would be a good idea to include a slip of parchment paper between the buttered halves of the bread to keep it from sticking. Now I have to go peel off all paper that's become a permenent part of my husband's meal. Anyone else done anything really friggin stupid lately???

Actually, I LOVE some of the store-bought Garlic Breads. I think they taste much better than the stuff that I've made myself. Maybe its the fact the butter & garlic are mixed well in advance and given a chance to really infuse with flavor. I'm in favor of you "cutting" yourself some slack on this one.

I don't have a story about me, but yours reminded me about one concerning my Grandmother (Mother's side) that I love to tell. Gram used to make the MOST delicious brownies, that I've never been able to or seen duplicated. Thick, rich texture and VERY chewy. Just on the borderline between brownie and fudge. I think the secret was undercooking and I'm sure she was making them hand-made, rather than the storebought mixes. She used to make a batch for us whenever we'd come to visit (which I loved to do, for obvious reasons). Or if mom didn't bring us kids along, she'd make them and send them to us with Mom when she came home.

One time, a week or so after my mom visited, she was talking with her mom on the phone. She asked my mom if the brownies that she had sent last time were good or if there was any problems with them. My mom said nope, they were great and all us kids gobbled them up like ususal. She said that she was glad, because she was worried. When my mother asked her to explain, she said that normally when she make brownies, she lines the pan with wax paper, to make it easier to get them out. This time, she could not find any wax paper, so instead she used cellophane wrap. The strange thing, she said, was that when she was done cooking the brownies, she could not find it. But the brownies seemed fine when she took them out of the pan.

I heated up brown and serve rolls in an oven that wasn't on. It had been on...so it was hot...so I popped them in and waited the 10-15 mins or whatever it was.

And yes, I did serve them. I thought they were a little off  That's when I realized everything wasn't everything, heh.

One more cooking disaster, though it wasn't mine!

A customer of mine's sister put on those press on nails for Thanksgiving. But she put them on BEFORE cooking. Apparantly, she lost 4 or so of them IN THE TURKEY STUFFING IN THE BIRD....so she told everyone she had put water chestnuts in the stuffing in case anyone happened across something crispy.

:o

I said to my customer 'you do realize that was poison, right?'

I think it was only last week that I made grilled cheese with Havarti, which always has the paper between slices, and yes I was chewing that paper before I realized.

I think it's kooky they put paper between the sides of your garlic loaf!

My friend cooked her first Christmas dinner for about 10 of us, I was helping her in the kitchen as she starting carving up the turkey...suddenly she pulls out the plastic bag full of giblets out of the cavity going "umm, what the hell is this???" We looked at each other and with out a word said I passed her the rubbish bin and we carried on...

Oh and in my first marriage many moons ago, I tried to boil an egg in our new microwave :o .... What?? my beauty and youth far exceeded my intelligence back then :P

During college years I shared an apartment with my brother, and I was the one who used to cook. One time I was gonna be gone for a couple of days and he asked me to show him how to make lunch for himself (other than ramen) so we bought some rice that comes in those little pouches that you just put in water for 5 minutes and voilá, a box of flake mashed potatoes, and a steak for him to grill. I showed him proportions of salt and told him the mashed potato was as simple as reading the box.

When I came back he said it was the most horrible meal ever 'cus he didn't put salt on the steak or rice (he forgot) and when following the instructions for the mashed potato he added 1 TBSP of salt instead of 1 TSP. :o He said it was like licking a lump of salt. :P

I recently burned hard boiled eggs. I didn't think it was possible...but hey this is me we're talking about. I took a shower while waiting for them to cook...then forgot about them. Next thing I know, I smell something burning. The egg shells were scorched and the water had all boiled away. DOH!

Oh and another dumb cooking thing....the typical leaving the giblet bag in the Turkey trick...ewwwwww. I did that with my first Turkey years ago.

Not lately... but I changed my oil once and the old gasket on the oil filter was still stuck to the car. Once I put the new filter on it had 2 gaskets... what a mess. Always check to make sure the gasket is still attached to your old filter.
