Question about Green Card No.

Hi everyone,

I hope someone can help me with this one. I'm a military dependent and my husband has new orders for a next duty station overseas. Since I just had my interview yesterday(approved gc with I-551 stamp), Oct. 26, I'm still gonna have to wait for the card on the mail. In order to file for my visa on the country we're going, I'm gonna be needing my green card expiration date. What should I put there, or what's it gonna be on the expiration date? Should I put Oct 25, 2009 or Oct. 26, 2009?

My I-551 stamp expiration was dated Oct. 25, 2008 (one year validity).

Thanks a lot I appreciate it.

GC "normally" will expire 2 years from your interview date. They must have forgot to advance the stamp!

You should check into getting US Citizenship since your hubby is in the military.

I think you can be expedited.

If her interview/approval date was October 26, then October 26 2009 is October 26 2007 + 2 years + 1 day!

I would think the expiration date was October 25, 2009.

As a comparison, my EAD card was approved on Sep 27, 2007 and its expiration date is Sep 26, 2008.

Yeah! I'm glad to also hear that! Although, what the immigration lawyer told us was that, I could get expedited right away because I'm leaving the country for an overseas military duty and should file for it as soon as I get my permanent resident card. But, the officer from the immigration told us on the day of my interview that my naturalization could get expedited 1 year after the condition on my residency has been lifted (3 years from the GC approval). I mean, who's telling the truth? Every time we ask about this matter, it's all totally different information from every person...

Shub, I didn't read your timeline...your case has been transfered, so most likely you'll never get an interview. Lucky!

Thanks! But what about the expiration date of your GC Shub? Is it on the same day with your AOS interview or approval?

I wouldn't think so! If you add a year (365 days) to any given date, you get the same date minus one day, e.g. October 26, 2007 + 365 days = October 25, 2008.

Likewise, October 26, 2007 + (365*2) = October 25, 2009.

That's how it usually works, independent from USCIS and green cards and such; I only used my EAD card as an example.

Think of it this way:

If you have something that starts on January 1st and lasts a year, it actually starts on January 1st at 12:00 AM (or 0000 military time), and it expires on December 31st of the same year at 11:59 PM (or 2359), the moment the clock turns 12:00. On December 31st at 23 hours, 59 minutes, 59 seconds, your card is still valid, but one second later, on January 1st, 0 hour, 0 minute, 0 second, your card is expired.

That's why such documents should ideally say that they last THROUGH December 31st, not UNTIL December 31st, to dispel any confusion, as "through" is what is really implied.

So in your case, your GC is valid from October 26, 2007, through October 25, 2009 (i.e. through the day of October 25th, 2009, until it becomes October 26th, 2009, at which point your card is expired). Therefore Oct 25 2009 is its expiration date.

I won't push it further for fear of adding confusion instead of helping, but the point is I'm quite convinced that that's how it works. Like I said, that's independent of USCIS.

October 26, 2009 will, hopefully, be the first day of the validity period of your 10-year card.

Thanks Shub! That's very enlightening. But i'm more confused, really. But thank you! I really appreciate it!

The question is, "How does the expiration goes?" I need an actual person to tell me "How the validity worked on their own GC"?

I have just checked my Greencard.... I was approved on 11/09/2005..... my greencard expires on 11/09/2007....

Thanks also Niagaenola, is it the same with everybody? That expiration date also at the same day with the approval? I couldn't wait for my card before I file for the visa to where I'm going to...
