Hey guys,

I have read just about every thread on selective service but still remain slightly confused about one issue. I am currently between the ages of 18 and 25, I entered the US in September, got married 2 weeks ago and will hopefully be filing for AOS in a couple of weeks. My question is: after I file my i-485 with USCIS do I still need to register with the Selective Service System in addition? should I even register before I file for AOS?

From my understanding registration will be done for me by USCIS as the i-485 states:

Selective Service Registration.

The following applies to you if you are a male at least 18 years old, but not yet 26 years old, who is required to register with

the Selective Service System: "I understand that my filing this adjustment of status application with U.S. Citizenship and

Immigration Services authorizes USCIS to provide certain registration information to the Selective Service System in accordance

with the Military Selective Service Act. Upon USCIS acceptance of my application, I authorize USCIS to transmit to the Selective

Service System my name, current address, Social Security Number, date of birth and the date I filed the application for the purpose of

recording my Selective Service registration as of the filing date. If, however, USCIS does not accept my application, I further

understand that, if so required, I am responsible for registering with the Selective Service by other means, provided I have not yet

reached age 26."

I am slightly confused as to why I would be required to register online, via post or in person for SSS if my application is accepted by USCIS? Any clarification would be extremely helpful!

because its a government office, and they sometimes don't know their own rules.

I recall one other guy not long ago who assumed that his AOS application was sufficient registration for selective service, but somehow his registration was never sent from USCIS.

Same thing happens with CR1/IR1 visas and USCIS is supposed to send application for social security numbers. They don't always get it done, or it gets "lost".

If you'd rather know for sure that it gets done, do it yourself. If you're a gambler, bet on the government doing it for you. ;)

I also read the threads on Selective Service, and it seems that even though the statement is in plain sight, I haven't heard of ANY case where the govt registers us for SSS! (We get a confirm snail mail once someone is registered with SSS). Reading all the threats of what would happen in the future if we don't register (not eligible for citizenship etc etc), I had gotten paranoid!

Because my motto is BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY, I went ahead and registered for my hubby (even though he arrived in the country in late May and turned 26 on July 1st). First I tried online registration, but his SSN wasn't recognized (too new; I did it before sending in the AOS application). So I followed the online advice and sent in the application via snail mail. Several weeks later, we received the confirmation mail that he had been registered. Now at least we have peace of mind.

When I can do something myself, I wouldn't wait around for the govt to do it for me.:lol:

I'm turning 26 this Wednesday and signed up for the Selective Service just in case... Indeed you never know if USCIS will forward your details to the SSS, and if they didn't, you could be in trouble when you wanted to apply for citizenship. As far as I know you're taken off their lists as soon as you turn 26.

I registered for SSS a few years ago when I was a student, I should probably update. I mailed in my i94 and f-1 info just so they had it. I am never too careful with the government.
