ouch

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20071025/D8SG9N880.html

The sanctions will cut off more than 20 Iranian entities, including individuals and companies owned or controlled by the Revolutionary Guards, from the American financial system and will likely have ripple effects throughout the international banking community.

The Revolutionary Guards, formed to safeguard Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution, has pushed well beyond its military roots, and now owns car factories and construction firms and operates newspaper groups and oil fields.

me thinks this won't end good at all.

I posted this in MENA btw so that I could get a handle on how the Iranian peeps feel about the situation. I know we have a few members with SO's from Iran so I wondered if the news has gotten to them yet and how it's being handled over there.

Meh.

With the overwhelming credibility that the USA's got these days - I'm sure Iran's just shaking right now.

Add that to: they're industrialized, have money, oil, one population - and I'll toss Syria into the fray as an example of a sanctioned industrialized nation with a supportive population, food, medicine production - and sanctions ... with a who-cares attitude to boot.

Sanctions won't stop them - unless they're embargo-ed by the UN (which will never happen) - this is meaningless.

In my opinion, this is like a non-binding resolution - HA-HA! If there's ever been a pointless waste of taxpayer dollars, it's the Democratic congress's non-binding resolution. LOL! Where'd they get that from? Comedy Central? LOL! I mean, I heard on NPR that - well - they're doing comedians jobs for them - making the jokes where you only need to *READ* what they've done to get some laughs. Pathetic. But this brings back the question: Are these politicians REALLY the best America has to offer? Put Bush aside for a second, and look at the people who empowered him: CONGRESS. If you want to blame someone for our current mess, blame them. Democrats AND Republicans alike.

I'm sure Iran's got an uber nuclear bomb called: "Al-Hamar kabir-jiddan" - strong enough to wipe out 3 planets and 12 moons. Plus, they've got aliens & chemical weapons on their side too. And dragons too ... plus, they're building the death star somewhere in the mountains with the help of Darth Vader.

I hear Cheney told Bush that. :P Condi's going to make a statement to congress soon. I'm sure they'll believe them without a question.

We could nominate a monkey named bananas wearing a tophat with a couple dice to dictate foreign policy.

Even: yes.

Odd: no.

I'm sure it would do a better job.

This topic of financial sanctions isn't really so new...

I read about is over a month or two ago in smaller news reports.

My husband is in Iran and I sincerely hope the US does not go to war with Iran. If only that the premise of WMD in Iraq was completely wrong and the US doesn't need another war drummed up by the NeoConservative Hawks in the State Department. Their intelligence was flawed for Iraq and I am sure they have no real clue about Iran as well. Especially since there have been no diplomatic relations with Iran, the US government has no in depth knowledge of how that country really functions.

Given US bumbling of many things military and intelligence-wise, I sincerely do worry a bomb would be dropped on or near my in laws house or husband's place of work.

Another thing is that Persians are very nationalistic and even though they don't like their own government, it's still theirs, and all them would rally together if attacked.

Hmm given about 30% unemployment, housing so expensive the normal person can't afford it, and inflation at astronomical rates, I wonder who we are really hurting. When next I told to my SO I will ask him what he thinks.

BTW still waiting for his second security check to be completed.

Let's hope for your family's sake and all good decent people in the world, that this talk is just talk. I just cant understand why the US doesnt get that Iran woul dmake a better ally than enemy. Lots of good people in in both coutnries who value peace and democracy.
