In no particular order:
  1. Potala Palace, Tibet

Did you get to go inside? When I was there in '05 the Chinese were not letting anyone go inside the Potala - they were hyper paranoid because Hu Jintao was coming to visit Lhasa and made all of these restrictions - all foreigners had to leave Lhasa one day before his arrival - there were tanks and PLA soldiers with guns all over the place and the Barkhor was deserted :o - in the end I wasn't complaining because it meant we could spend more time at Samye. :) During our brief stay in Lhasa we did get to go inside the Jokhang(the holiest temple in Tibetan Buddhism) so I was happy.

Yes. I was there in '97, I think it was. There were CCTVs everywhere. Monks worked as guides. I had been to India a few times and told one monk who was showing me round that my regret was that I didn't get to Dharamsala & try to see the Dalai Lama. He ushered me into a corner, out of view of the cameras, and whispered to me, "We pray for his return."

Interesting Kiribati is on your list - have you read the book The Sex Lives of Cannibals? It's about a guy who spent some time there working for an NGO, thinks he is going to a 'South Seas island paradise' but his experience was completely otherwise - hilarious book. My mom and grandmom went fishing there in the '80s and enjoyed it. I would love to go to the Cook Islands myself.

I have had several interesting trips by train (Europe & USA) but my favorite was from Washington DC to California on the Amtrak...book yourself a sleeper cabin and experience the trip across the states!! I went in the fall so the landscape was brilliant with fall colors, then thru the rockies with the snow....

Did you ever make it to Pokhara? What about Nagarkot? That is our special place.. (L)

I want to go to Ladakh, too, so many amazing gompas there and wonderful culture.

Go to Dharamsala after Losar when HHDL is giving teachings, but book a room well in advance b/c it's packed. Maybe see if you can go on a group tour/retreat with a lama who has some clout and get a private audience - we were so lucky and it is something I will never, ever forget.

Neither yet, but both are on the itinerary for next year when our son is on winter break from school. We plan on going for 2 weeks again and only trekking to the village in Nuwakot (not any extra trekking) so we have time to fly up to Pokhara for a couple of days and maybe a side trip to Nagarkot.

I also REALLY want to find out where Matsyagaon is... I think it is an outlying community somewhere in the Kathmandu Valley where the air monitoring station (there are 5 or 6 set up around Ktm and you can get the reports online) shows the cleanest air by far in the Valley. THAT'S where we're gonna live! My sinuses kill me every time in Ktm... I basically have to stay on sudafed to keep from getting the mother of all sinus infections. :( We have a friend there who thinks he might know where it is. I going to find it, come hell or high water.

Many thanks to the Visajourney community for all the help!
