My wife and I were married last month and sent in the AOS docs in October. They were received on the 13th of October if I remember correctly.

One mistake we made was that we never got her a SS#. We didn't know she could get one, but I guess we have to wait until we get the greencard now?

How can we go about getting her identification with her married name on it now? I would like put her on my bank accounts and get her insurance in her married name, but she has no ID with her name now.

My wife applied for and received a SSN with her married name. They requested to see her passport, her I94, and our marriage certificate.

If you applied for the EAD that can be used to apply for a SSN.

Alot can be done with her passport along with the marriage certificate as a form of identity. One thing, check with your bank, some want the SSN as well as the insurance company. In my situation, I had to wait for the bank account but my husbands company had me on the insurance right after our marriage and before I had moved here, without a SSN. It just all depends on the employer and insurance company.

If you do not have a SSN by tax time, apply for a ITIN at the same time filing "married filing jointly", that will cover that problem.

If the I-94 is close to expiration or has expired, I don't think the SSA will assign her a number. So, it looks like she will have to wait until she got the greencard, not unless she applied for EAD. That will allow her to apply for SSN.

How about getting her a state ID?

We didn't apply for the EAD yet since we didn't have the SSN. That may have been a mistake I guess, but she doesn't plan on working right away anyway. She's working on her English right now and really isn't confident yet.

If you applied after the AOS price changes, you can file the EAD papers without it costing anything. If you filed before then yep, you might have to wait for the card.

We planned to apply for the SSN after we received notice that the AOS was in process. We applied after the price increase so the EAD is paid for in the $1010 check.

I wonder if she could get a state ID with her married name if we bring the marriage license, Philippine ID, and passport. We are Illinois and the only place I know to get a state ID is the department of motor vehicles.

I applied for SSN right after the wedding and got it 3 weeks later, we filed our case after we got my SSN. But when we tried to get a driver's permit and license, as well as a state ID, the people at the DMV informed us that K1 visa holders are not eligible for any state-issued ID's until they adjust status. They told us to come back when we get the notice from the USCIS that my adjustment of status is approved already, only then can I apply for a license and ID.

Thanks, thats helpfull. We won't waste our time going to the DMV for an ID. I guess she's just going to be in limbo while we wait for the greencard?!?!?!? No ID with her married name at all? How do they expect us to put her on bank accounts etc. ?????

I've read that it's too late to apply for SSN now. Her 90 days are past.

I applied SS# before I got married and I went back to SSA to changed last name to new married last name. I didn't had any problem at all. She can use passport as her I.D.

My SO had trouble to put my name on his bank accounts even I got Greencard already  they want to see my DL or State I.D

I'm the USC changing my name, but so far I've been asked to just show my marriage license as proof of name change. The DMV wouldn't take my SS card with my name change, only my marriage cert. So ask, its the only way you'll know. Regarding getting a state issued license, check with your state's DMV. It varies based on state at what stage of the AOS process you can get an ID. Some states you just need to show NOA1's, some you need approvals... Definitly check on it if you want your wife to have her ID

My husband was still able to add me into his accounts and insurance policies, with just my passport, SSN, and marriage certificate. The only problem is sometimes when I use my credit card and the cashier asks for an ID, they don't want to take my passport. So my husband ends up showing his DL and his credit card with the same account number as mine.
