Ok so I've been checking out the prices for my trip to MTL, then to Victoria to wait for the visa, then back here again, and it really seems like staying in MTL waiting for the visa could be cheaper. It will be pretty close though, and either way, neither route is inexpensive at all, so what I'm wondering is if anyone knows if I can have the visa over-nighted to me in MTL?

I'm not sure if the envelopes are the same size as the Xpress post ones or not, or if MTL would even send it out the next day, but I figured it was worth looking in to.

Has anyone ever tried this before?

I obviously haven't tried it yet, but since every day you wait in MTL is going to cost you money - maybe it's worth a try? I think it is worth looking at to see if you can get an express post local delivery for the next day.

Anyway if you can get an envelope the same size and it's like next day - why not ask at the consulate if it's ok? :) (I would also buy a regular one just in case though haha).

Once Montreal got my package to thier post office, it was here within 24 hrs. I just assumed thats what "express" meant, as in next day. Thats all it took from Montreal. It still took them 5 days to get my package there. Its a matter of them getting your package together, and how long it will take them. I would think it will depend on how busy they are, and how many others have to go out. I know the day I interviewed, there was at least 100 people waiting.

Bah...it's just not worth the risk, I guess. I live in Victoria, BC, but have been visiting here in NC for 3 weeks now. I will be flying out of NC for the interview, so it would have to be a multi-destination flight, with flying to Mtl, then to Victoria, then back to Raleigh.

Anyways, I guess just the risk alone of them not mailing out the visa that day, or the next and having me waiting the whole weekend and all the way into the next week alone in Montreal with nothing to do was enough to convince me to just shell out a few extra bucks and go visit family while I wait :) (Plus my dad volunteered to use some of his airmiles to fly me over to BC to visit, so it won't be so bad afterall, hehe.)

Thanks for all your input everyone:)

lived in Victoria for nearly 9 yrs! Just of off the Gorge River (Colquitz Ave) Was a nice area. Actually we wnr back to Vic for a few days in Aug and had a good time, even though we were both sick, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

That's three of us Vj'ers then so far that came from Victoria! There was another girl around a few months ago that lived in the Shelbourne area.

I lived in Shelbourne, Hillside and Esquimalt. (What can I say, I wanted to experience ALL of Victoria, lol.)

Such a beautiful city, though. I will definetely miss it!

I thought you were in the States now, I was wondering because of the interview specific information I was reading today here.

Just after it talks about all the express-post envelope stuff (page 3) it says:

If you are living in the U.S., in legal status, you may retrieve your visa at the U.S. Consulate Montreal. Although we cannot guarantee a processing time for the return of the visa, most are usually ready for pickup the following business day after the interview.

Just thinking that might apply to you, can't hurt to try :)

Vancouver issues the next day unless they changed their policy. It used to be same day. But anyway, you should be good to go! It's Montreal that's the ones that specify the xpresspost mailing.

Ditto. MTL does not allow you to go pick it up - they mail the thing
