I think since there are many people on VJ for whom English is not there first language or have difficulties.... I think people do well... if it bothers you that much then maybe this is not the place for you... There are lots of things that bother lots of people but we don't all start a thread about it... I hate photo's in peoples signatures but they are there so I have to deal.. If the worst that people do to you is spell thing incorrectly then you have nothing to worry about...

Kez

lol.. actually the people from whom I've seen the most mistakes, are from english speaking countries.. so, no, the furriners are not the biggest offenderzzzz

OMGZ I LIKES TO WRITEZ LIKE THESE, PLEAZE SEPERATE YOU'RE APOSTROPHE'S!!!

bwahahahahaha. P writes like that to me on purpose because he's a big n3rd and wants to see if I can read L337. Unfortunately (or fortunately, perhaps?) my years of teaching high school English has brought about an understanding I never knew I had :)

As for realizing that many of the people who make these mistakes on VJ are foreigners, I don't think anyone here is mocking them. That doesn't mean it's not annoying to see these errors (especially in the native speakers!!!). Just because people find it annoying doesn't mean they're "omgz0rz these people are stupid!" At least not for me. I don't lose sleep over it, I just make a mental note when reading and sometimes make a "pshaw" noise in my head.

Yes, now I sound completely certifiable.

Wow, I can't believe this thread is so long....

From what I can see, most of the people making the mistake of "lose" and "loose" are native English speakers - I would never make remarks about a non-native English speaker's grammar.

I was just tired and in pain (from working out) when hubby left to go to work and I was still awake....that's why I started the thread. I didn't know it had already been done - twice before.

I'm an English teacher and guess I'm just bothered by some things like that. I'm always getting on my students about their spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar....

I know that my spelling in Portuguese is often better than my husband who doesn't like to write and could care less about it....so it's just me - or not since there are people who agree with me  .

As an English teacher you must encounter students that just are not good at the written language... no matter how hard they try it just does not come together for them.... the same is true with maths, some people find it very easy and some struggle all their lives just to basic maths.. everyone has strengths and weaknesses, I just dont see why it needs to be pointed out..

I see the Spelling / Gramnmar Poilce are making their rounds. We are ONLY human. Geez!

If you can understand it, then don't let such a small thing get to you. I make mistakes too from time to time, mostly because of fast typing. English is HARDLY an easy language even for those that actually consider it theirs.

LOL @ the native english speakers then!! who can't seperete the differences between loose and lose.. again.. the non- english natives are not the ones with 'THIS' mistakes.. and agree with all the english teachers! my wife also hates mistakes like that, and doesn't justify crappy grammar or spelling with 'it's just an internet forum' or anything like that

Kez-I teach College Math and I have to disagree somewhat with the bolded statement.

Mathematics is an absolute science whilst English ( or basically any language) is abstract and subjective.

Mathematics is the SAME the world over to everyone X+X=2X; yet language arts are vunerable to nuance, dialect and personal interpretation- to compare Mathematics to English comprehension and writing is to compare apples to oranges....IMO

I have found that once the " strugglers" in my classes have been retaught the basics of mathematics; they go on to complete the rest of their higher level math classes with relative ease.

I have had more than afew people tell me " they struggled all their life" and " just have no aptitude for Math"-yet have gone on to not only pass College Algebra-but Trig, Calculus, Diff Equations...etc etc. Like anything else-It takes work and commitment...from BOTH teacher and student.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!
