Guys

I know that is not the fist time that somebody asks this question. I used to have a credit card with my name under my hubby's name , I used it for 2 years paying on time without any problem and recently found out that this card is not helping me to build my own credit, . My question is :What would you recommend me to do? Since I need a little financial independence from my hubby..

waiting for your replies..

and thinking about what to cook for dinner...

If you work and your is in the bank account or you have your own bank account, try to talk to the bank. Since they can verify your income easily (check, direct deposit, etc), it might be easier.

Try to get secured card. I applied for credit card 1 month after I moved. I got the partially secured card which allows me to build credit and get non-secured credit card few months afterwards.

Or ask the bank who issued the card for your husband and they might issue a card for you too.

Good luck !

According to the financial advisor I talked to from my local bank- HSBC. I was told that in order my husband to build credit under his own name, it is adviseable for him to open a bank account under his own name, rather than adding him on mine. Then, after 2-3 months, he can apply for secured credit card. In about a year or even less, it will build his own credit worthiness.

My husband had accounts at Bank of American for 3 years, so when he got his SSN, he applied for a credit card in his name and got a 1000 dollar limit unsecured card.

I agree with tom&tata, try to talk it out with your bank first. This is what I did when I learned that I wasn't building credit (my husband added me to all his accounts), after several runabouts I decided to go to another bank. I specifically told the banker my purpose and asked if they can realize those goals for me within a specific time frame. I also inquired about the bank's schedule when it comes to reporting to the credit bureau so I would at least have an idea how their system works. In short, I took the secured credit card route starting off with a $300 credit limit but previously opening a savings account and checking account only under my name and SSN. I have been using it since August and have been paying off the full balance each time. Just very recently, I received a pre-approved credit application from Chase bank. I'm not buying but at least I know something is actually happening.

You might want to try the secured credit card route. Good luck!

I got one with joint with my hubby, I am not authorized user on his card, we share the account so I'll have my credit built using my card. We'll also open a bank account together so build a relationship to the same bank that issued us the credit card, for future stuff like leasings and mortgages.

Good morning everybody

Good news, I opened a new checking account at Washington Mutual and got approved for a Secured Credit card, I think that's the easiest way. I put down $300 and in about 10 days I'll be getting a new Master Card credit card. I thought that they were going to keep my $300 but they explained me that after a few months I can show the records of all the payments I make and they can approve me for a real credit card.

Thanks everybody for sharing your experiences with me

Have a great day
