Unfortunately, he could really have been southern :)

I remember in college sitting completely dumbfounded in class while 4 students insisted that the Holocaust was a product of liberal propaganda and not real at all. I would say that my college town was a pretty progressive Southern area, but these students were all locals.

It takes all kinds, I guess....

So what are you saying? It's genetic? Or maybe something in the water? Or maybe everyone from the South is the same?

I don't buy this South bashing or preconceived stereotypes. 2007 Germany is a much different place than 1938 Germany....isn't it? Or maybe not? ;)

Calm down, peejay. I'm FROM the south I am not bashing the South at all. I am pointing out that the guy could just as easily have been a local as he could have been a transplant. Did I say it was genetic or that it was something in the water? No I was relating a story. And yes, Germany now is far different from Germany in 1938 in many aspects, but there will always be people who still believe in the ####### that led to the Holocaust; and to the ####### that led/leads to anti-black and anti-Jew beliefs in the United States. I teach the Holocaust, so I am well aware of current beliefs around the world. Don't be so quick to jump on a person and make assumptions when one is merely stating an example.

No...I'm not pissed of at you, the thread, or any of the comments. I'm just stating my 2 cents on the subject.

There are a lot of foreigners that read these threads and get their impressions of America from them if they have never traveled here before. I'm just giving a different perspective and attempting to educate. Also past threads here on VJ about the South made me pipe in.

Too many times I have read young Southerners here on VJ damned near apologize for being born in the South as if they are ashamed of themselves in an attempt to try to disassociate themselves from the stereotypes of the past. And I have traded posts here on VJ with people from other parts of the USA that freely espouse these stereotypes with abandon, but have never even been to the South. They just read about it or heard about it and that makes them an expert on how things are today.

I'm 51 years old and have been around. Some of the worst rednecks I have personally run across in my life were some individuals from New York state, Boston, and some Hispanics from Texas along with the White Southern variety too. That's all I was trying to convey. The South hasn't cornered the market on ignorance or lunatics.

I will say that the South and the West is more conservative than other parts of the USA, but there are exceptions even to this personal observation.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

I had a John Kerry bumper sticker on my car -- it was keyed repeatedly, and I had several nasty notes telling me that I should "leave if I don't like it here" left on my windshield.

In North Dakota.

Hatred ain't just confined to the south, folks.

That's exactly why my personal choice is to not express my opinion! Idiots like that.

I never said it was. I've told my husband repeatedly that we'll not be moving up north any time soon (in my lifetime) because the people in the south are a lot nicer and we actually care about each other down here! Rednecks are everywhere and are of different classifications for sure.
