As stated earlier, the fire dept. is asking people's help by staying off the roads whenever possible. I believe the Red Cross will always welcome outside donations if you'd like to help out, Marc. :)

i call my ex zuni girlfriend fay....see what she can do

Very scary stuff. We have a friend from Russia about a mile from the fires north of San Diego. We spoke briefly this morning, but it looks like their house should be fine.

Now they have a use for the 40k+ FEMA trailers!!!

I heard they auctioned off many of them but there are still several thousand left. They are small but its a roof.

Nagishkaw---know a good rain dance???

Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented immigrant" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensedregistered pharmacist". (because somebody gives a damn)

Actually I think most of us here object to your childish pot-stirring

Forgive me, but I think your holding the spoon.

Re-read Steven's post. Not to mention San Diego is 90+ miles away from most of us.

Having experienced 5 hurricanes and tropical storms first hand, you save yourself first and get out of the area. If volunteers are needed, they will ask for them. As I doubt very many Californian's own their own private firetruck there is little you can do but get in the way.

AFTER the fires are out there will be HUGE opportunity for volunteering. Some people will open their doors to friends, family and strangers. Some will help rebuild. But now its not the time to get in the way of the professionals. If you come across a small emergency (i.e. old lady fell down and needs help) do what you can. But don't risk your life to douse the neighbors house with a garden hose. I can tell you right now that money donated to the Red Cross does not go directly to the current crisis. We ran into this problem with Katrina and Ivan. It is piggy banked for future use. We did the most good by conducting our own charity and relief missions into the Gulf Port area and getting guidance from the locals as to where the help was needed. The Red Cross does not know anything about the 85 year old lady who lives in the shack behind the old church at the end of the road. It is local knowledge that will do the most good.

For those of you out there in the area, old t-shirts make great rags for cleaning things. Sounds stupid but the Red Cross refused used clothing for Katrina and Ivan. We took the cotton clothes to Mississippi and gave them away as rags for clean-up. (we're talking thousands of shirts folks!) People loved it.

Sorry but the Red Cross just failed so many people here in the Gulf Coast. I know they mean well. It was just too big for them.
