This whole hyphenated thing in the US is so confusing....this is what I want to go by.... FirstName, MiddleName, Maiden Name-DH's Last name

on my SS Card it's just First name and DH last name

on Conditional Green Card it's First name , Middle initial and DH last name

on my DL it's First name, Maiden name, then DH's last name

So at work everything is messed up, work has it the way that I want it ( FirstName, MiddleName, Maiden Name-HyphenatedDH's Last name)

My email address is also like that first name intial, middle name initial, maiden name

But when I filled out my I-9 form I listed my hyphenated last name ( FirstName, MiddleName, Maiden Name-DH's Last name),but SS and DL have different names.

I didnt check the box where it says " if last name differs from SS check here" I just left it blank..

Do I have to change SS card or can I just leave everything like it is - i.e 4 names at work, but 2 on SS card?

I'm so confused now...arrrrrrrrrrr...

What do I do???Help :help::crying:

First off your work is supposed to have you listed as your name appears on your SSN card.

http://www.ssa.gov/employer/paperq&a.htm#ein

Q. How can I make sure that the employee's SSN and name given to me are correct?

A. You should ask to see the SSN card, although the employee is not required to show the card unless it is readily available. You should record the name and SSN shown on the card in your business' personnel and payroll records that will be used to prepare W-2 reports.

If the employee indicates he or she prefers to use a different name for employment purposes, advise the employee that you must use the name as it currently appears on the card. Also advise the employee to request an updated Social Security card with a name change and to show it to you so that you can update your records and so that your records and the Social Security records will agree.

If your marriage certificate has your age or date of birth and the state where you live allows it you should be able to have you last name Hyphenated with your maiden and married last names.

RM 00203.210 Changing Numident Data

B. Procedure – Evidence of a Legal Name Change

1. Marriage Document or Marriage Record

c. Hyphenated Name - Combination of Bride and Groom’s Original Names

In some U.S. States one of the partners or both partners may take a new last name that hyphenates both partners' surnames. (EXAMPLE: Barbara Mullendore married Daniel Michael. If she married in a State that permits this, she may change her name to Barbara Mullendore-Michael or Barbara Michael-Mullendore.)

Interim Guidance: If the bride or groom or both want to take a new last name that hyphenates both partners’ surnames, accept the marriage document as a legal name change for the bride or groom if the new name can be derived from the marriage document; and it only shows each partner’s first names and the bride and groom’s surnames. The marriage document alone can be accepted as evidence of identity for both the old and new names when it meets the criteria described in RM 00203.200G.2.

2. Determine if the ID Document Has Required Information

Ask the applicant to submit one or more documents that show the person’s name AND provide:

-- Biographical information in addition to the person’s name that the reviewer can compare with the data on the SS-5 (e.g., date of birth, age, or parents' names) and/or Physical information that the reviewer can compare with the applicant (e.g., physical description, photograph).

NOTE: A non-picture identity document must have the person's name as well as information that can be compared to the Numident, the applicant or other documents submitted (e.g., age, date of birth, or parents' names).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Name Change to a Name Different From Name on Immigration Document

Monica Mumma Stottlemyer applies for a replacement SSN card in her married name. She:

-- Completes an SS-5 showing her first name as Monica, her middle name as Mumma, and her last name as Smith; Completes the other names used field, showing that name as “Monica (first name), Mumma Stottlemyer (last name);” Signs the SS-5 as “Monica M. Smith;”

-- Submits a U.S. marriage document showing Monica Mumma Stottlemyer and John Smith married last week (the marriage document shows the dates of birth for Monica and John);

-- Submits a driver's license with her photograph that shows the name Monica M. Smith; and

-- Submits a DHS employment authorization card with her photograph and showing her name as “Mumma Stottlemyer, Monica.”

The U.S. marriage document supports the legal name change and is acceptable evidence of identity in both the old name and the new name because it shows biographical data (date of birth) that can be compared to the Numident record. Further, the name to be shown on the SSN card agrees with the name on the additional identity document in the new legal name (the driver's license).

SSA can process the name change request. Process the SS-5 to have the name “Monica (first name) Mumma (middle name) Smith (last name) to be shown in the card and enter “Monica (first name) Mumma Stottlemyer (compound surname) as an “other name used.” The compound surname must be entered the same way it is shown on the immigration document. Advise the NH to also contact DHS to change her surname to “Smith” with that agency.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once the SSN record is corrected you should be able to get the DL corrected. Now for the I-551 card you would have to apply for a new card to get that changed. Now whether you should correct that now or let it ride until you file the I-751 to remove the condition I'm not sure.

I sooooo feel for you! In Germany it seems pretty common to hyphenate a name. Everyone in the U.S. is waaaay confused about my name (I suppose it doesn't help that I not only got by my middle name, but also a nickname of the middle name). From what I understand the name on your SS is what your official name is. When I got married and only had the maiden name on the marriage certificate they told me I'd have to go to the SS office to get the name changed. So I believe the SS is what your official name is. So maybe you should get it changed.

I've had some similar issues with my name...

SS#: Correct...First name, middle name, hyphenated last name.

Driver's license: Incorrect...hubby's last name then a comma, my middle name and then my maiden name used as my middle name (if that makes any sense). I showed them my SS card and they flat our refused to hyphenate, grrr.

I know there is a million more examples that I can't think of now, but I know people just love to ignore the first part of my last name and call me by my hubby's last name, grrrr. You can't just split it! On a similar note I hate the old style of addressing a woman by her husband's name, eg. Mrs. Joe Smith. I'm Mrs. Jane Smith, thank you very much. I'm my own person! Sorry, just my ranting about old fashion.
