Changing middle name

My wife's passport and visa shows her middle name. When she married me, she said it was traditional for her to take her maiden name as her new middle name. The man behind the window at the social security office didn't think so. I also sent off all the adjustment of status documents listing her former last name as her new middle name. Is the U.S. goverment going to recognize this, you think?

We did that and had absolutely no problems with USCIS or SSA.

Wife had no middle name, so her family name is now her middle name, and she took my family name.

That is strange . I didn't had problem with SSA to keep my maiden name.

Whats the difference if someone does the hyphenated name thing?

To Filipino culture, it's fairly common for the wifes nee to become the "middle name". As for hyphenating, it's also very common.

"Maria Lucinda Lopez-Smith" or something like that.

As to your other question about AOS, the answer is no, again we had no problems with my wifes middle name being her former last name. This issue was never addressed by any government agency we dealt with.
