First of all, why do you always talk to me so bluntly like I'm an idiot or something? Second, the instructions also said "United States Customs and Immigration Service". The reason I asked if the short form was ok was because unlike Canada where you can fill in the money order yourself, I found out the bank had to do it. I would have looked at the instructions FIRST if I had known they do things so backasswards in this country.

Oh...and thanks to the other 12 people who read my thread but couldn't be bothered to help.

Backasswards:

Adj;

1) Acting without reading instructions

Use the following guidelines when you prepare your check or money order for the Form I-485 and the biometric service fee:

1. The check or money order must be drawn on a bank or other financial institution located in the United States and must be payable in U.S. currency; and

2. Make the check or money order payable to U.S.Department of Homeland Security, unless:

A. If you live in Guam and are filing your petition there, make it payable to Treasurer of Guam.

B. If you live in the U.S. Virgin Islands and are filingyour petition there, make it payable to Commissionerof Finance of the Virgin Islands.

NOTE: Please spell out U.S. Department of HomelandSecurity; do not use the initials "USDHS" or "DHS."

I always answer with the least amount of words, quick and to the point, and for the most part post links to where the answer can be found, and not from the top of my head.

Now if you really want to see short and to the point answers, the All Mighty Yodrak is the winner in my book.

Note what this says at http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/men...00045f3d6a1RCRD

"Fees should be made payable to Department of Homeland Security or U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services."

Curiously, it mentions nothing about not using short forms. Hence, the necessity of my question. Thanks. I'm having a nice day.

Personally, I only look at the instructions that come with a form to complete said form. Though your link to that page on www.uscis.gov states that it's ok to write the check out to US Citizenship and Immigration Services as well as to Department of Homeland Security, the specific instructions for the actual form state to write the check out to Department of Homeland Security, specify not to use their abbreviated name, e.g. DHS or USDHS, and do not mention US Citizenship and Immigration Services at all.

You will sometimes find contradictory information in two different places that are both maintained by USCIS, but I find it best to go with whatever the instructions to the form I'm filling out specify.

In the end, if USCIS gives you contradicting pieces of information on how to fill out a form or a check, it's up to you to use your best judgment to make the call on what to do, provided you do one or the other thing they tell you to do, and nothing else!

So based on that, I guess writing the check out to "U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services" is OK, but don't write it out to "USCIS". I personally have always used "Department of Homeland Security" for the checks and always will (and it's also shorter than the full name of USCIS).
