Hi! my name is Elaine and I have been going with this man that i am so in love with for 2 years. We are engaged and want to get married. He ask me if I could go to Lagos. I was scaried because I heard so many things about Nigeria. Is it safe for me to travel to Lagos and marry my Fiance. We are so in love. Or can he come to the US on a tourist visa and meet me ane we get married here in the US and I file for a K3 Visa anda 1-130.

Please get back to me please.

We don't know what to do. I got my passport three weeks ago and have some problems with the law that I have to work out first. We were going to Ghana and get married.

Forget about a tourist visa, it is virtually impossible for an African to get one and wasted time and money. It is also visa fraud to come here with a tourist visa with the intent to marry and he would have to go back home.

I am unclear if he is from Ghana or Nigerian.

I am also not clear if you have ever met or dated online for 2 years.

If you have met within the last 2 years you can file a fiance petition K1.

If you want to marry him you have to go to Ghana or Lagos. Many from the sub-saharan forum have gone to Lagos and felt safe. I do not know the dynamics of your relationship so that is a decision you have to make.

For my first trip to meet my fiance I established a friendship with a pastor of my church's denomination and felt very safe to know

I can go to him and his wife at any time.

Best wishes.

Elaine, I'm not sure if you are the person I met through TripAdvisor. If you are, then you already know my opinion, don't plan a marriage without meeting face to face.

If you are not, then I would say....the nonimmigrant visa to get married in the US is the K1 visa and it requires you to have met in person within the last two years unless you can prove some extreme hardship or condition that would have prevented you meeting. I think the only one I've heard of being approved was a religious one and in that case, the father of the bride met with the groom and his family. Those waivers are pretty hard to get. Tourist visas aren't easy to get and if he's living in Lagos, they are pretty near impossible without all the right connections.

Since you say you just got your visa three weeks ago and can't travel because of legal problems, I'm assuming you haven't met in person yet, so I would guess you don't qualify for K1 and should plan a trip to meet this man face to face.

Using a tourist visa with intent to come here, marry and stay is visa fraud. And like Omoba said, it will be near to impossible for him to get a tourist visa.

You have 2 options:

(1) K-1 (fiance visa): If you have met within the last 2 years and can prove this with documentation, you could file for the fiance visa. It is a fairly easy process and most people get through it without a hitch.

(2) K-3 or CR-1/IR-1 visa (spousal visa): If you want to get married and bring him here you can file for the spousal visa. For the K-3 you would file the I-129F and I-130 but once he gets here you will need to adjust status. For the CR-1/IR-1 there is no need to adjust status and he would be able to work right away (not true in the case of the K-3).

For more on the visas read the guides.

Please get back to me please.

Have you met this man that you are engaged to? If not I would highly suggest you meet and spend some time together before deciding you want to get married. I think that would be the wisest first step.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

i dont think u will have any problem visiting lagos alot of people have been in lagos and went back to their country savely, so that should not be a problem, if u realy love him u can visit and get marry, then file for spouse visa rather than fiancee visa, i guess when marriage involve it helps a bit with visa processing. may GOD BE WITH YAH
