OMFG - I almost forgot. Mom is bringing me Timbit today from Canada. She stocked up in Edmonton before she caught her plane. That just made me in a better mood.

I certainly hope she is bringing you more than one!!!

Me too! Anyway, I hope you have a ton of fun with your Mom MrsCat.

Len, thanks for your post in that thread too, it was very nice of you :)

I only did it because Mrs. Cat promised threatened to enslave my children.... wait. I don't have any  I was PWNED!!!! :o

Why do people on VJ, feel the need to take a personal swipe at you when you answer with your own opinion?

Someone asks a question, you reply - someone takes a swipe - because they feel they know everything.

This is of course directed at one person in particular that ticks me off on a regular basis....i'm tickkkkkkkkkkkkkedddddddddddddddd.

Awwww Trailmix and MrsCat .... (L)

I just read those posts. How frustrating.

I have just read the posts as well. :(

I would just like to send my appreciation out to trailmix for all she does on both the Canada forum and the CR-1 /IR-1 forum. (F)(F)(F)

Anytime I have posted a question it has been answered quickly and pointed me in the right direction. I believe that we are all here to share and help each other along the best we can. I take full responsibility for what I read and what advice I take and if someone mistakenly gives me incorrect information I'm not going to jump all over them.

I'm going off on a rant now - sorry.

And MrsCat I second your thoughts!

So went to Starbucks and finally decided to try their espresso truffle thinking it would be something MORE than a glamourized cup of hot chocolate.

But alas... I was wrong. Should have stuck with the venti non fat chai no water.

Has anyone expressed their opinion (vent) about the use of diposable dishes on a regular basis just not ocassionally in some homes in the USA. Or is it just that I come from "green" BC and as an educator and a Girl Guide leader I am trying to make sure that things are reused, recycle and reduced. My stepson even said the other day, "wow, the recycling bin is always full now and the trash aka garbage has hardly anything." When we went to Virginia for holidays, there were no real dishes readily available just disposable. It is sad to think that the landfills are full of throw away dishes. For Christmas this year we bought decent disposable plates and cutlery and I washed it all and put away for the next big soiree. I was vetoed down with renting dishes etc. So I will continue with my cloth shopping bags, and try to educate my corner of the USA about the dangers of dispoables especially foam. End of rant.

Thanks for listening.

I do notice here that many people use paper plates and cutlery and throw them out right away.... I've never seen it as much in Canada as I do here. I always bring my cloth bags for groceries and often get 5 cents off per bag.

Wow, I can't imagine using disposable plates and cutlery for family gatherings! No matter how many people there were at Christmas time, and sometimes there were a lot, my mom always used her good china. (And a few everyday plates if needed!) I think part of the fun for us was doing the dishes and cleaning up after dinner. :P

When I get here for good, we will have enough dishes for and cutlery for about 45 people ( no good china though, sold it all to pay for a semester of university), so then we will use real stuff but a bachelor pad just has a few things :)

For some family suppers, we just use disposables, makes clean up soo much easier. Plus were going to get hit by an asteroid in the next few years, so why worry about recycling!! I saw deforest it, burn it, pave it baby!! lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

 yep... it's true.. our church is trying to "go greener" by using paper instead of plastic for most of the potlucks & coffee hours.. we go through SO much plastic that way.. arg..

We use our cloth shopping bags all the time. We just leave them in the trunk so they are always with us.

I leave mine in my trunk too! It really does make it so much easier. If I don't leave them there I tend to forget them, and then try to walk out of the store holding all my groceries, (if I can), instead of using a plastic bag!

which would be ok if you were having a formal sit down dinner.. but family gatherings here are way informal.. people help themselves whenever they are hungry and sit wherever there is room..

Depending on the size of the gathering I either use the china (good or every day) or disposable paper plates. I do wash disposable plastic knives and spoons and forks and disposable plastic plates and re-use them until they break. I also have cloth bags or re-useable plastic bags from Aldi's that I keep in the car. Sometimes my groceries are more than fit in the bags though. What is it with the US propensity to put only one or two items into each plastic bag? And why would it make a difference whether the tinned or dried catfood kibble gets put into its own separate bag instead of in with the other canned stuff? Apparently people complain when this happens so baggers are told to make sure they keep them separate. For heaven's sake - it's pet food, not cleaning products. It's not going to contaminate anything!

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
