Oh, that sucks :( *crosses fingers*

I've never heard of this, but my work is holding my first paycheck, which means I'm not getting paid for another three weeks... right in time for Hanukkah/Christmas. It's a little frustrating since I would like to do my holiday shopping before the last-minute shoppers stampede the stores :P

Holding your first cheque for what? I don't understand. If you worked, you better get paid! The only time I have been late getting paid on a new job is if I come in on an off pay week.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Yea, I share the same thoughts with you Amanda - as far as I'm concerned, I've worked my first two weeks and I should get paid! And no, I didn't come into the middle of a pay period, they were actually specific about starting me out at the beginning of one.

My husband's grandmother told me that holding the first paycheque is a common thing to do in the States, but for the life of me I don't really know why.

As far as I know, this is standard policy in most places.

Every place that I've ever worked pays one pay period in arrears. I've only ever been paid monthly so for instance, the paycheck that I got at the end of Novemeber was for the work done in October. I've worked in Canada as a programmer and in tech sales. In Bermuda, I've had many different job roles.

I think this is because the payroll people start working out what the staff will get paid a week or so before the end of the pay period. If they were paying you for the current month, they'd be setting up to pay you for work you hadn't done yet and may not do.

Most people don't get paid monthly, they get paid bi-weekly. I don't know how I would survive if I got 1 pay check a month and it was at the end of the month, regardless if it's the same dollar amount at the end of the day.

I've also been paid weekly before which was kinda nice.

It all depends on what you're used to. I was paid monthly with the gov't. for 20 years! I had my first month's cheque held back as well. Now that was 27 years ago mind you. I had my mortgage, and all bills to pay during the first week of the month, the rest of my cheque went for groceries etc. You get used to it and I loved it. When they changed the system to every two weeks I had a very hard time adjusting. I had to change payment dates on some bills because if everything stayed the same, then I was broke within the first week, and would have to wait a few weeks for another pay period! Wow, sure screwed up a few things. It was extremely hard to adjust to bi-weekly. But eventually I adjusted. I had more than a few late payments in the first two months!

haha Yeah I could see that. If I went to monthly, I'd probably be out of money in the first week!!!

I worked for the government in Canada though, and how here in the US, and was paid bi-weekly in both places. I don't think I know any one who gets paid monthly. I guess it's less work for the payroll staff though to be paid monthly.

Aw.

Sorry to hear also.

It does suck.

I fall asleep easily enough usually.

It is staying asleep that I am having difficulties with.

Bleh.

What are they going to do for you to help the biggie vamoose?

I hope you are not in pain.

BTW, the friend I visited in Fort Lauderdale, the one who is quite sick...

Well, when he was in the hospital, I visited him there.

There was this gorgeous lobby, a piano, a Starbucks, and a, a, a:

McDonalds!!!!!

My first visit to a U.S. hospital.

Is this "normal"?

Maybe in the big hospitals? I've been to a few local ones here in New Jersey and I haven't seen any food chains or anything.
