Near Hartford...why? You feel like crashing a wedding? ;)

I am sure if you guys show up after the dinner no one would notice, its an open bar. Come on!

LOVE IT!!! WE are in New Haven, so about 45 min away!! Tee hee.. what weekend ?? It's a classically CDN thing to do to crash a wedding no? All the old diddies in my hometown on PEI all crash wedding ceremonies.. they don't even dress up - just sneak in the back rows just to 'make fun' of what everyone is wearing and so they can phone their friends when they get home and tell them how "ugly" the bride was  I promise to behave myself :)

I swear, I think I need to come down from NH and crash that wedding too. I certainly need the free booze right about now!!!

Okay, so hubby has been laid off for 5 weeks. We have yet to see an unemployment check, although he has been told that he will be receiving $250 a week when he gets it. Today, he was called by a placement agency offering him a job as a carpenter's assistant. He was excited just because it was a job (even though he is way overqualified for the job) and took the job without really thinking about it. He is supposed to start tomorrow. Well, now here is the problem. The salary is $10 an hour and the job is an hour away from home. Soooooo ..... after taxes, gas money and paying for full time daycare (he has been watching the baby most days), we estimated that he will get maybe $40 to $80 a week (not exactly sure how much taxes will be deducted). And right now, Declan is covered under Medicaid because they have a special program for 0-1 where the income requirements are a bit higher and we actually qualify with only one income. However, as soon as hubby works, his gross monthly salary would put us over the limit and Declan would lose Medicaid. So, I would have to add him to my health plan at work, which costs 200-300 a month for Declan. We can afford that when hubby has a better paying job, but that is near impossible with a $10 an hour job. The staffing agency anticipates jobs in the near future for carpenters and hubby really doesn't want to tick off the staffing agency by refusing this job he already committed to, but we also cannot see how it is feasible to take it (of course, it took us a little while tonight to remember the medical insurance piece, really wishing he had remembered that earlier before he said okay to the job). Tomorrow he is going to drive the hour to the job site and explain his dilemna to the guy and then also explain to the staffing agency, but we are really worried this will screw him with the agency. We just can't see a better way.

^autumnchik is that the only staffing agency that can help your husband find a job? Is it a temp position or permanent? I think recruiters are probably used to people changing their minds -- they have the advantage of working from a large pool of prospective candidates so I don't think he'd be in too awful of a position if he was honest with them. After all, you need to have a job worth your while so you two can live.

Right now I have a staffing agency pretty much on my case daily about me making a decision about a job that I am not 100% sure about. I know I could take the job but I want to be sure about another offer I am waiting for. Anyhow, my point is that you really have to look out for yourself first -- even if you are working with a recruiter. I hope that makes sense. :)

Our teeny timeline:

Jan 23 '08 ~ met online

Mar '08 ~ 1st visit to Vancouver

May '08 ~ 2nd visit to Vancouver

Jun 08 ~ plans to move to the west coast!

Aug 8 08 ~ he moves to Bellingham

current ~ many trips back and forth across the border...

Unfortunately temp agencies always pay pretty low I have found. They go to the temp agency because its cheaper to get employees through them then to hire them themselves. But driving an hour to get to a 10.00 an hour job? Not worth it. If he explains it to the temp agency I am sure the agency would understand too.

Sorry to hear about all of your troubles autumn :(

Oh autumn I'm sorry to hear about your dilemma! I think it's a wonderful idea that at least he goes out and talks to the supervisor. If it's a carpenter's assistant job, that must mean there is at least one carpenter! Sooooooooo, maybe they will have a carpenter's job open soon, or maybe they can find him something else to do, or maybe they can....well, who knows! Wait until he gets back and hopefully something good can come from this! I'll be crossing my fingers. Let us know!

Thats true. Or he could prove how great he is and they would hire him on full time, but its based on hope, thats what sucks about temp agency. You could get a boss who wants to eventually hire you or you could have someone who just wants the cheap labour for a short amount of time.

The Crown Plaza at 100 Berlin Rd in Cromwell - Saturday, September 20th.

I am not even kidding. Party starts at 7:00 :D

 Well.. that's the weekend hubbies away in MO Soooo... this CDN is without anything to do that particular weekend

Autumn... I'm so sorry... that is such a hard call to make. I know the temp agency I worked for always said I could turn down work and they would still call me (and since joining I've turned down EVERYTHING and they won't leave me alone).. so... I hope that is the same for him. Did they ask him a minimum amount that he has to have to work? Sometimes that helps if you quantify how much you have to make in order for this whole thing to make sence. I know they had a pay rate on file for me at the temp agency.

Did your hubby every get EI? I can't remember if you said the outcome of that.

I asked aforementioned friend when they were getting married, she told me, then she said 2 days later they are moving to TO. Oh, did you find a place to live yet said I ? Noooo she said.. he figures we'll just live in a hostel for a few days  LOVERBOY! WHOOOOO! Way to sweep a girl off your feet on her honeymoon!!!

Honestly.. I've had enough.. This girl is OFF her rocker for marrying this guy. PERIOD.

I'm sorry you are all having such a challenging time now Autumnchik.

And as for starry eyed Anne of Green Gables life seeking young Japanese girl, I wonder how many young women get themselves into such pickles, Emancipation.

Crazy! At least you knew her whereabouts.

She trusts you.

Do keep tabs on her and pay attention to see if she needs intervention.

E - Yes, he does qualify for unemployment. It is supposed to be $250 a week, we haven't begun receiving it yet. However, today the woman at the staffing agency told him that she has to report to Unemployment that he refused a job ... so who knows if this will screw him there and he will lose unemployment. Hubby is at Unemployment right now, waiting to speak to someone and explain why he turned the job down (if he took the job, with expenses like gas and child care deducted, we would actually be paying out more than he would take away for health insurance because we would then lose state benefits). Hopefully, they will understand and not penalize him. The staffing agency lady was really nasty to him (apparently this agency has a reputation for that). The problem is, this is a rural area and many of the bigger construction companies use that agency for hiring, so we are really worried that she will not recommend him for jobs anymore. He is going in today to try to smooth things over with her.

UGH... that's not good.. hopefully the EI people will hear him out and understand. They seem more reasonable here in the US than in Canada.. at least the process seems more straightforward. Hang in there girl. Hopefully there is something much much better just around the bend...

Hang in their autumn!!! Things always work out in the end.

So, my to-be sister-in-law has now changed the wedding date of 2010 to aug. 2009. She has never lived with any one else besides her parents and shes 24 years old. She said that she doesn't think it is going to be a big adjustment living with someone. She things the bigger adjustment is going to actually be the marriage (which supposedly is going to solve any problems they have right now)

She is having a $50-60,000 wedding so I'm not sure where they are going to be living afterward, but knowing her luck she will have a spectacle of a wedding and end up living in a gorgeous house.

I left home at 18 and lived on my own until about 6 months before I moved to NJ to live with my now husband. I'm also 24 and was very young to get married. After being in a 3 year long distance relationship is was the only think I could think of as the next step in our situation.

My future sis in law is still in school and talks about how "the wedding has to be next summer because I will be spending most of august getting my classroom ready.."

She does NOT have a job yet...she only talks of future jobs. In fact, at 24, all she does right now besides take two classes is being a teacher's aid which there is virtually no pay and even a kid in HS could be one.

She was telling me all this on the phone last night at 10pm when I just wanted to get some sleep. Some of us people who work REAL jobs and are always TIRED need the sleeeeep!

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

minor vent...

so hubby told me last week that on Wednesdays at work they have to stay a little longer because they are going to have this class.....

I guess they found out today that they aren't going to get paid for it but they are going to get pizza :P They have been having this little class during the meetings on Wednesday mornings but I guess the boss didn't like that they were essentially getting paid to take this class

ok my hubby just clarified this it seems that instead of having their weekly meetings Wednesday mornings they are going to have them after work now... I thought it was just the class...

so my hubby's class after work ended up being about 90 minutes long and yeah they did buy pizza but it was the crappy cheap pizza from costco... geez, if they aren't going to pay them for the extra time they should at least get them good pizza...
